Where To Stay Near Crater Lake

We are travelling to Crater Lake for one day as part of a trip north. We spend the night at Crescent City, then hope to spend one night near the lake and then go onto Bend the next day. We have a 2 year old, so we don’t want to do huge amounts of driving in a day, if possible. Our trip is in August and I am having a lot of trouble finding a place to stay not too far away from Crater Lake. I’d rather keep going north than have to go down to Kalmath falls for the night and back up. Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

Getting To Bend And Crater Lake

Bend is located in Central Oregon, with Crater Lake located a little bit more south. The easiest way to get to Bend, if traveling from far away, is to fly into the Redmond Municipal Airport, which is about 25 minutes north of Bend. However, this airport is pretty small, with only 5 airlines and only non-stop flights to and from Denver, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Phoenix-Mesa, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, and Seattle. So you may have to have a layover depending on where youre flying from.If you fly to Bend, we highly recommend renting a carto get around. While downtown Bend is super walkable, to explore trails nearby and Crater Lake National Park youll definitely want a car.Visiting from other areas of Oregon or Washington? Here are the approximate driving times:From Portland: 3 hoursFrom Cannon Beach: 4.5 hoursFrom Seattle: 6 hoursBend and Crater Lake would make for a great road trip from any of these destinations!

Getting To Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake National Park is located in southern Oregon and is the states only national park. Most visitors fly into Portland and then drive five hours south to the parks north entrance. Alternatively, you could take a regional flight from Portland to Medford or Redmond and drive about two hours to the park.

Another popular option? Fly into San Francisco and drive north to Seattle and explore several national parks along the way: Yosemite, Lassen Volcanic, Crater Lake, Mount Rainier, and Olympic.

Did you know that you can take a train to Crater Lake? Surprise! From July 1 through Labor Day, you can hop aboard Amtraks Coast Starlight and get off in Klamath Falls. Then you simply take the Crater Lake Shuttle to the park.

What Towns With Lodging Are Near Crater Lake

Crater Lake, Oregon

Because Crater Lake is in a very remote part of the state, there are few accommodations nearby. The closest actual town to Crater Lake is Prospect, which has a historical hotel .

Another 20 miles south on Highway 62 is the town of Shady Cove, which has an Edgewater Inn. Medford, which has numerous accommodations is still another 20 miles down the road. All of those towns are on Crater Lake Highway, making them the most convenient.

Staying in Ashland would require you to drive on Interstate 5 about 15 miles from Medford. The drive between Ashland and the national park takes about two hours.

One Night At Crater Lake Lodge In Juneshould We

Due to the sell-out of Crater lake Lodge so far in advance, we are contemplating one night in early June. We would go to Grants Pass, Or and spend the night and then leave early for Crater lake. We would then , drop off our stuff at the hotel and cruise around the lake. The days will be long that time of year. The next day we would be able to do more lake admiring and then head out in the afternoon. Is one night there enough, if we have really almost two full days of siteseeing?

In a perfect world, we would ride a motorcycle…but that time of year doesn’t seem very perfect worldish.

I have read the May 30th posting and am a bit disapointed to not be able to take a boat trip. However, I really want to make it there this year and stay at the Crater Lake Lodge. What’s my chances for half way decent weather the middle of the second week of June? Thanks!!

The Cabins At Mazama Village

Rather, each cabin covers the basics with one or two queen beds, private bathrooms , and free Wi-Fi connectivity the recently renovated interiors also pay tribute to the region with vintage artwork and wooden furnishings that reflect the forest just outside your door.

The cabins also boast an excellent location, just steps from the parks general store, gas station, and the Annie Creek Restaurant and Gift Shop .

Crater Lake Road Trip

A visit to Crater Lake – Oregon, My favorite National Park in Oregon

Crater Lake is one of Oregon’s top natural wondersand just three hours north of Eugene – Springfield. Every year it draws thousands of visitors to view its brilliant blue waters. It is the deepest lake in the U.S. and also one of the purest , with visibility to 400 feet .

All around the lake is hiking, cycling and birding. A rigorous hike down to the water is rewarded with boat tours, swimming and fishing but the hike back up is difficult so be forewarned! In the winter there is snowshoeing.

The historic Crater Lake Lodge was built in 1915. Open seasonally, the lodge also includes a dining room offering three meals a day. The Lodge’s Great Hall is an inviting place to relax and linger, or sit on the porch overlooking Crater Lake. There is a gift shop onsite and campgrounds and cabins available just outside the park in Mazama Village.

Eating In And Around Crater Lake

If youre looking for a place to eat in the park, your options are pretty limited.

Rim VillageThe Crater Lake Lodge Dining Room offers upscale dining with spectacular lake views. If you dont want to splurge on a full dinner, you can order soup and other light offerings in the Great Hall or take drinks out onto the patio. The Rim Village Cafe serves to-go salads, sandwiches, and soups.

Mazama VillageAnnie Creek Restaurant is a sit-down dining option for breakfast sandwiches, burgers, and pizza. The campground store sells snacks and beverages. Its a great place to grab an ice cream bar on your way out of the park.

Outside the parkIf we only could recommend one place to eat during your visit to Crater Lake, itwithout a doubtwould be Beckies Cafe at Union Creek Resort, located 25 minutes west of Mazama Village on Highway 230. Dont rely on your cell phone to get you here ask a local for directions. Its the quintessential place to eat after a long day at the park. Beckies Cafe is home to some of the best burgers that youll find anywhere. More importantly, save room for pie, made fresh daily. While theyre all worth trying , the Very Berry and Pecan are our favorites and are available year-round.

If you visit in September, youll be here for huckleberry pie season. Thats just another reason to visit Crater Lake after Labor Day.

Other places to eat include Prospect Hotel Dinner House towards Medford and South Shore Pizza in Diamond Lake near the north entrance.

When To Visit Crater Lake:

Crater Lake weather can essentially be divided into two distinct seasons summer and winter. The summers are short and winters are long, so plan ahead if you prefer visiting Crater Lake when its not freezing out!

Summer: I recommend visiting Crater Lake during the months of July, August, and September. This will ensure that the park roads will remain open for the duration of your visit, and you most likely wont freeze to death .

These also happen to be the most popular times to visit Crater Lake, but dont fret the park is rather large so youll still be able to find your own spots of peace and solitude.

We visited Crater Lake over Labor Day weekend, and totally expected the park to be crazy crowded the entire time. To our surprise, we found the park to be relatively quiet, and even had a bunch of trails all to ourselves at some points. Maybe the fear of smoke kept people at bay, or maybe Im just used to masses of people in other parks nearby .

I do need to point out that this area have been experiencing some particularly horrifying wildfires in the recent years, which have only been getting worse and worse.

Before visiting Crater Lake between the months of August to October, its wise to check on the smoke and therefore air quality conditions. Smoke and haze have the ability to drastically affect the view of the lake, and breathing in toxic air is obviously not favorable.

Hiking In Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake offers visitors a wide array of hikes in terms of difficulty and views.

Lake accessLocated on the northern edge of Crater Lake off the East Rim Road, 2.2-mile Cleetwood Cove Trail is the only way in the park to access the water. Going down? No problem. The 700-foot vertical descent is relatively easy because of a series of switchbacks. Climbing up is a different story! It can be strenuous. As mentioned, you must hike this trail to board the boats. If youre so inclined, bring a fishing pole as youre welcome to fish in Crater Lake as all the fish are invasive.

Parking is extremely limited here, so arrive early in the day.

Hiking In Crater Lake:

Listed in order of difficulty :

Sun Notch: This super short, .8 mile relatively flat loop will grant you perfect views of Phantom Ship, which is definitely a sight to be seen! Youll hike through an open pumice meadow directly to the rim of Crater Lake, where youll instantly get fantastic views of the lake!

Dont miss the two Phantom Ship viewpoints along the trail as they provide different angles of the unique formation. The Sun Notch trail also provides great views of the Chaski Slide and Dutton Cliff. Aka dont miss it when visiting Crater Lake!

Pinnacles Overlook: Looking for something a bit different during your visit to the National Park? Check out the pinnacles, towering needle-like formations of rock which are actually volcanic ash spires. The trail is wide and basically flat, with many views of these strange structures.

You can really see what effects erosion and wind have on the environment. They slightly reminded me of the hoodoos in Bryce Canyon! Note that the Pinnacles overlook is located 6 miles off the main road from the lake , so dont expect any lake views over here.

These kooky structures more than make up for the extra driving time though. Psst you dont need to go all the way to the end to see them.

Discovery Trail: 2 miles roundtrip, small elevation gain. An easy trail with spectacular views of Crater Lake along the rim. Snaking right along Rim Drive, youll want to be sure to stay on the hiking path in order to soak up the views .
