Paia Coolest Place To Stay In Maui

The small and historic town of Paia is our top choice for the coolest place to stay in Maui. It is situated on Mauis north shore and is well-positioned for exploring the islands most popular attractions, including Hana, Haleakala, and Kahului.

Once a booming sugar plantation town, Paia is a laid-back village known for its vibrant storefronts and unique boutiques, as well as its independent art galleries and incredible local restaurants. If youre keen to escape the crowds and experience the real Maui, Paia is the place to be!

Is It Worth Staying In Hana

After the long journey to Hana, gearing yourself up to drive all the way back to your hotel can feel exhausting. A one night stay is absolutely worth it. It gives you the opportunity to not feel rushed on your journey and you can make as many stops as you want. Plus, you get the chance to do activities on the route home, like the Pipiwai Trail or the Oheo Gulch.

And lastly, a night stay in Hana is quiet and peaceful. Maui can feel crowded, especially in the high season. But Hana never feels crowded in the evenings once the majority of the day-trippers leave. Its a night of peaceful relaxation that you wont find on other parts of the island.

For our visit to the islands this time around, we wanted to spend more time in Hana. We always search for island style accommodations that are reasonably priced. Hale Nanea met and exceeded those expectations from the lava rock walled entry and plumeria lined driveway to the well stocked household, comfortable furniture, and beautiful Hawaiian quilts in the bedrooms. The Internet photos don’t do this place justice. There was an ocean view, as promised, and wonderful spacious grounds to enjoy. We liked the location, less than 5 minutes back to town, 5 minutes to Hamoa Beach. I priced several other houses in the area and Hale Nanea was a good value. As a couple, we didnt need two bedrooms, but it was great to have the extra space. We were very comfortable there and would rent this house again. Wendy and Otto Horen were great to work with and the banana bread was the best. No need to buy any on the way there.

Our Favorite Hotels On West Maui

There are so many great hotels on the west side, but we wanted to share our favorite three, ranging from budget to luxury.

  • Montage Kapalua: Located in Kapalua, the Montage is the best luxury hotel on the west side. It offers a secluded location, world class golf courses, easy walking trails, and is minutes from beautiful Kapalua Bay. You also have some of the best restaurants on Maui within a short drive. The luxurious hotel has 56 one to four-bedroom villas spread over 24 acres. Book a stay at the Montage Kapalua Bay here.
  • Westin Kaanapali: Located right near Whalers Village in Kaanapali, the Westin offers easy access to a lot of amenities on the west side. Aside from being on one of the best beaches , it also has the best pool in Kaanapali, and is a quick walk to the restaurants and shops in Whalers village. Book a stay at the Westin Kaanapali here.
  • Kaanapali Beach Hotel: This is probably our favorite budget hotel on the whole island. When you step onto the grounds, it feels like youve been transported back in time. Everyone is friendly and the grounds are simple but beautiful. Located right on Kaanapali Beach, the resort offers everything you need in a great location and for a great price. Bonus! They underwent a beautiful new renovation to their rooms in 2020. Click here to book the Kaanapali Beach Hotel.

The Montage sits on beautiful Kapalua Bay .

Where To Stay On West Maui

West Maui was developed in the 60s as the prime tourist destination on Maui. And when you visit, its easy to see why. The West Maui Mountains offer a beautiful view from the white-sand beaches. The water is crystal blue and there are plenty of easy places to swim for people of every ability.

West Maui is on the leeward side of the island, meaning youll get less rain, but things will also look a little drier. There are four main areas to stay on West Maui:

  • Kaanapali: A master-planned resort community, Kaanapali first opened in the 1960s. Hotels, condos, and resorts are built along the white sand beach with shopping and restaurants in the center in Whalers Village.
  • Lahaina: An old historic whaling village, Lahaina is now a bustling center with lively stores and restaurants lining Front Street. Its also a launching pad for many of the ocean excursions like snorkeling and whale watching. There are few hotels, no large resorts, and a handful of vacation rentals.
  • Napili: Picturesque Napili Bay offers a laid back vibe, with low-rise condo buildings and small beachside resorts. Napili itself is a small community centered around a beautiful bay, great for snorkeling and swimming.
  • Kapalua: A luxury resort area in Northwest Maui, theres the main resort and vacation rentals that line the bluffs and the world-class golf courses. Kapalua gets a little more rain and wind, but its also more lush and green.

Resorts line West Mauis Kaanapali Beach.

The Keanae Peninsula is a short diversion from the main road and the turnoff is just past the Keanae Arboretum on the left.

Drive to the end of the peninsula where youll find a parking lot, baseball field, and public toilets. Theres a pretty view of the coastline and the waves crashing into the rocks.

Return the way you came and stop at the snack stand Aunty Sandys for your first banana bread of the day. Our loaf was warm and moist and was our favourite on the Road to Hana. You can also buy drinks, ice-cream, hot dogs, and sandwiches.

    About The Old Joes Legacy

Joes place was originally established in 1923. It was completely rebuilt in 1982 into its current shape and rooms. After being purchased by the Franklin family under the new name Hana Inn in May, 2018, it was restored again all interior floors, doors, fixtures, switches, faucets, toilets, bathroom vanities and sinks replaced, with new beds and new furnishings. We will be making the name transition to Hana Inn, formerly Joes Place over 2020, and move entirely to Hana Inn in the future. The exterior, as of January 2020, aside from the new windows and doors is rustic Hawaiian.

The property is a one + acre parcel edged on both sides and the upper side with Banana trees, palms, and many native flowers. A view of Hana Bay and the outer coastline can be seen from the upper part of the property as well as rooms 5, 6 and 7. The common living room is for the use of all guests, and has new flooring, furnishings and HD Cable/TV in the common TV room. The common kitchen, shared by The House, has had less work structurally or cosmetically, but does have new pots and pans, so feel free to cook.

Please note: The floor plan WAS for shared bathrooms, excepting room 8 which is the only room currently with an en suite bathroom.

Be sure to bring charcoal briquettes and starter if you wish to make use of the BBQ.
