This Is One Of My Favorite Vacation Spots

This is one of my favorite vacation spots. Very off the grid. Surrounded by beauty and nature.. A shot ride to Mammoth. In winter June Lake Ski is less crowded and great for family ski & snowboard season no matter your level. Parker Lake is a nice hike and not too difficult. Not a lot of selection at the one small town market so keep that in mind during preparation.

Get Your Mind Blown At Hot Creek

Things To Do in JUNE LAKE LOOP: Where To Stay, Best Eats ...

If youre into the idea of witnessing milky blue water bubbling up from the bowels of the earth into small pools ringed with layers of travertine, go to Hot Creek. This otherworldly sight is about 30-minutes from June Lake and is a win for geology lovers, or really, anyone with an appreciation for astonishing natural phenomena. The water is heated by magma about three-miles beneath the Earths surface, and is surrounded by steam that has spent about 1,000 years traveling through an elaborate underground plumbing system.

This sight is located off a dirt road , and is a short walk from the parking lot above Hot Creek Gorge.

As you walk down the paved path, dont be scared off by the ominous signs highlighting the areas death count. Despite an exhaustive amount of warning, people still swim across the Owens River to walk the perimeters of the pools of boiling water. Sometimes, these people slip in and the results are not great. In addition, geyser eruptions and small earthquakes are not uncommon. But as long as you stay on the approved side of the river, youll be good. And dont worry, the views from the safe side are still spectacular.

Where You Should Eat In June Lake

Cathys Candy: A charming little candy store downtown!

*Ohanas 395 Food Truck: This is the Hawaiian food truck thats parked outside June Lake Brewery from 11am-4pm daily! It was a fantastic lunch, I highly recommend it.

Tiger Bar: This is clearly a locals bar but it also houses a cafe that serves all 3 meals.

Where not to eat: We went to Gordos Mexican and I felt like it was average Mexican food A few locals also told us that the food at the Eagles Landing is a big hit or miss and its better to only grab cocktails/drinks there to be safe.

Rush Creek Trail To Lake Agnew And Gem Lake

Level: StrenuousLength: About 7.25 miles, out and backElevation Gain: About 2,000 feetTime: 4-6 hoursTrailhead: By Silver Lake, near the Frontier Pack Station

Rush Creek Trail actually connects June Lake with the Ansel Adams Wilderness and the John Muir Trail. But you can also do a day hike up to Agnew Lake, or Gem Lake, and back. Even part way up the trail, you get fabulous views of the June Lake Loop lakes below.

A view of Gem Lake

If you do plan to get up to Lake Agnew, the toughest part of the climb will be behind you, and we suggest allowing for more time and hiking up further to Gem Lake. Agnew Lake has visible man-made structures, and it may seem like too small a payoff for the climb.

Along the route, you will also get great views of Horsetail Falls, June Lakes tallest waterfall. If you are looking for a shorter hike, you can turn around here. But if you keep climbing, you will arrive at Agnew Lake, where the trail levels off before climbing again to Gem Lake.

At Gem Lake, you can walk along the edge to the western end, where you have access to a beach. This is a great spot to have a picnic lunch before heading back.

The trail goes steadily uphill from the start, and is almost entirely exposed, so start early in the day. Note that there is a creek crossing along the trail that may have fast-moving water during snow melt season, making is dangerous to attempt the crossing.

Best Time Of Year To Hike In June Lake

California Road Trip Destinations: Buttermilk Boulders and June Lake, Vanlife in California

Summer and fall are the best times to hike in the June Lake region. You may still encounter snow at higher elevations in the early summer, or later in the fall.

In the summer, you will enjoy beautiful green vegetation and colorful wildflowers along the trails and on the slopes. In the fall, the leaf peeping is some of the best in the Eastern Sierra.

Creeks can be forceful in the late spring and early summer due to snow melt, so be extremely cautious and turn back if conditions are not safe.

If you hike during the fringe months, when there is likely to be snow or ice on the trails, wear appropriate footwear, for example, hiking boots with microspikes.

Soak In Natural Hot Springs

Things To Do in JUNE LAKE LOOP: Where To Stay, Best Eats ...

Because none of the springs are secret, minimize your wait time by making a trip on a weekday, or before 4pm. However, if the pools full when you arrive, take heart. People are often courteous and clear out after a reasonable amount of time. And even if someones not courteous, most cant stay in super hot water more than 1015 minutes anyways. While you wait, take in the mountain vistas and make friends. Weve heard some of the best travel stories from half-naked strangers weve met at these pools.

Top Fall Foliage Spots On June Lake Loop

The entire area is popping with color and at the end of the day, its worth just driving around and seeing whats turning color on that day. As you probably know, not all the leaves turn color at once. As it gets colder, more and more leaves turn. That being said, below are our top areas to head to see some fall foliage in June Lake!

*Hwy 158: On your way into town, youll take Hwy 158. Right before you turn the corner and start descending into June Lake, youll be surrounded by tons of yellow aspen trees. At some points, youll be rewarded with views of Carsons Peak, the lake AND yellow trees, all in one go. On the other end of Hwy 158 between Silver Lake and Grant Lake, youll find some more stunning trees lining the roads.

*Iowa Street: Theres this spot thats near Iowa Street and June Lake Loop road that had a little field and mountain views sandwiching a line of fall foliage.

Note: Im not 100% sure on this exact spot, but I scoured Google Maps and am pretty sure its around Iowa Street. Use the photo below to guide you!

*Silver Lake: We went kayaking on Silver Lake and loved the yellow trees dotting the shores of the lake. From the water, we looked up in the mountains and saw the most beautiful orange, red and yellow trees cascading the mountain range. Theres a little creek that winds through the marsh that makes it a fun paddle, too.

This Is A Great Lake To Swim In

How to Road Trip to June Lake Loop

This is a great lake to swim in! Very clear, clean, cool, shallow for a looong distance so walking in the water is fun. We went later in the day when most people were leaving and the weather was perfect, the water temperature was divine, such a pretty and peaceful place later in the day. Pretty crowded on the weekend by quieter by Sunday afternoon. Not many places to eat. Skip the pizza place! We waited well over an hour for our pizza standing right there and when they gave it to us it was ice cold.
