Eat At A Local Restaurant And Coffee Shop

One of our favorite things to do when visiting a new area is to eat at one of the local restaurants and coffee shops. While there isnt necessarily an iconic dish to try in Kanab, there are a handful of great spots to check out.

Restaurants

Rocking V Cafe: We loved this spot! They focus on slow food, have a diverse menu, and are located in a very cool old building, with an art gallery upstairs and the occasional live music. We had the Kanabadabadoo burger and the deep dish veggie enchiladas and they were both out of this world!Wild Thyme Cafe: Wild Thyme is another local gem serving up delicious chicken, beef, and seafood dishes.Peekaboo Canyon Wood Fired Kitchen: This vegetarian spot has great pizzas!Escobars Mexican Restaurant: This Mexican spot was always busy when we drove by it!

Coffee & drinks

Sunny Creek Cafe: This is a cute little drive up or walk up coffee stand, with sandwiches, breakfast burritos, and cinnamon rolls too!Willow Canyon Outdoor: This is an outdoor store + bookstore + coffee shop all rolled into one, which is the best combo ever!Kanab Creek Bakery: This coffee shop and bakery has delicious pastries, as well as sandwiches, salad, and coffee drinks!Asava Juice & Smoothies: Need a refreshing treat after a warm hike? Things To Bring When Visiting Kanab Utah

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah & a visit to Four Corners

To ensure you have a safe and enjoyable time in Kanab, here are some items wed suggest bringing with you!

Water

No matter what youre doing and what time of year, be sure to bring and drink plenty of water. Even in the winter you can become dehydrated quickly in the desert and mountains. The air is super dry and our throats and noses were not fans at first! We love our Camelbak bladder for hikes because it stores a ton of water and its easy to drink from while moving.

Proper footwear

When hiking through slot canyons, possibly through water, over and around boulders, and on slick rocks, youre going to want a sturdy shoe for lots of terrain types. We almost always wear our Lowa Renegades and Altra Superiors , but also love our Chacos, which are great hiking sandals, for the warmer months and for sandy and smooth rock terrain.

Layers

The temperature can swing widely throughout the day, with the mornings being cool or cold, so make sure to pack layers!

Sun Protection

It is very sunny in Southern Utah and we may or may not have gotten a little sunburnt at first. Sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen are a must! We have been using Bare Republic, which is a better for you sunscreen, although it may give you a nice white, vampire-esque sheen.

We highly recommend downloading AllTrails maps for any hike you are going on, so you can navigate without cell service. You will need an AllTrails Pro membership which is $29.99 per year, but is WELL worth the investment in our opinion!

Saint George Best Area In Zion National Park For Nightlife

Less than 70 kilometers west of Zion National Park is the town of Saint George. Once a sleepy agricultural town, Saint George has undergone a bit of resurgence of late with its incredible natural surroundings attracting more permanent residents.

One of the largest and most vibrant cities near Zion, Saint George is also where youll find the best nightlife. Now, the nightlife in Saint George can, by no means, rival that of a big city, like Vegas, LA, or New York, but for this part of the world, its not too bad. This scenic country setting is home to a number of sports bars, charming pubs, and rustic restaurants, perfect for unwinding after a day in nature.

What are people saying about hotels near Kanab, UT?

This is a review for hotels near Kanab, UT:

“This hotel is a mixed bag. Nice staff. Good service. But the part that’s most important to me was lacking. The comfort of the bed and bath. The bathroom is circa 1970 with old tile and dirty grout. The bed was very uncomfortable. I kept waking up all night with pain from pressure points. The sheets are thin and cheap. I hope the management reads this and takes note that modern hotels have better mattresses and sheets. Not a hard fix.”

Tips For Driving Around The Kanab Area

There are a few things to be aware of when driving in the Kanab area and Southern Utah. Many of the activities we highlight in this guide will require driving down gravel/dirt roads that may or may not be in great condition for rental or low clearance passenger cars.

Higher clearance will be beneficial

While you can drive to most of these spots with lower clearance, having higher clearance will give you peace of mind and also not limit what all you can do. Our Sprinter van did fine on the roads, although we had to go so slow since its also our home, but not having 4×4 did limit what all we could visit.

Beware of taking your 2WD rental car off road

Some rental car contracts forbid driving off of the pavement and may be cancelled if you do, so make sure to check the policy for your car.

Check road conditions

The back country roads can be rough, unmaintained, and impassable after a rain. You can check the road conditions with the BLM office or tourist officesfor many of the attractions. While not always updated online, we had decent luck calling them to find out if the roads were okay.

Be careful of wildlife on the roads

Wildlife could cross into or be on the road at any time, but especially around dawn and dusk. We unfortunately saw so many deer that had been hit.

Try to stick to the main roads

When travelling between places, stick to the main roads and dont try to use back roads as a shortcut , since you may not know the condition of the road and could get stuck.

Visit The Nearby National Parks

Kanab is close to two of Utahs Mighty Five National Parks, Zion and Bryce Canyon. Zion is the closer of the two, at just a 35 minute drive to the Eastern entrance , while Bryce Canyon is about 1 hour and 20 minutes away. You can also take a day trip to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, which is 1 hour and 45 minutes away. Warning: since Arizona does not partake in Daylight Savings Time, this park is sometimes in a different time zone.

  • Rent Atvs In Kanab Utah

We were lucky enough to experience the Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon ATV Tour and it made the list of our top ATV Tours hands down! You will meet them downtown Kanab where they will then drive you to the trailhead. From there, youll get to jump into one of their nice ATVs and start cruising.

Weve driven ATVs before but believe that even a beginner could happily enjoy this trail. Our guide was always checking on us and making sure that we were doing okay. 20 minutes into the tour youll arrive at the Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon .

Expedition Kanab also offers a tour to Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon. Use code PartTimeTourists10 for 10% off any of the tours they offer.

I was able to experience Antelope Canyon in Arizona just a few months earlier and I have to say that if I had to choose a favorite, it would be this slot canyon. We hardly saw any other people and there was plenty of time to stop and take pictures. Whats more is that because it was a small group size, we really got to learn a lot from our guide about the history of this slot canyon.

After having some time to explore, we hopped back on the ATVs and rode through backcountry trails. We would occasionally stop and learn detailed facts about the area which was perfect for my history-loving husband. Im confident in saying every tour with Kanab Tour Company would be amazing but the Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon tour will always be a fond memory of ours!

    What To Pack For Kanab

Kanab weather has all the seasons: a very hot summer, cool spring and fall, and snowy winters. Depending on the season you are traveling in, I would look up the weather before you go and dress accordingly!

Other than generic packing ideas, these three things are an absolute MUST when traveling to Kanab:

    1. WINE Lol

Kanab is in Utah and if you like a drink after a long day of hiking, pack some wine or liquor for your hotel. There is one liquor store in Kanab that is not open on Sunday and closes extremely early. They also have a very limited selection, so if you forget to pack something, you will need to drive 20 minutes across the Arizona boarder for a drink LOL.

    2. Baby Wipes

I would highly recommend bringing some baby wipes if you plan to hike and do multiple activities in a day. There is red dirt EVERYWHERE and it will get all over your clothes and legs. I did a three day Utah road trip, so I was hiking and exploring many times throughout the day. I would have been miserable if I had to get back in the car with red dirt all over my hands and legs!

    3. A Good Camera

Kanab is known for its slot canyons and caves, which means getting a picture in those light conditions can be very tricky! I attempted to get a good picture on my IPhone in the caves and it turned out SO BAD. Every single picture in this guide is taken with my DSLR camera, which is extremely affordable and a great size for travel.
