Hanalei Best Area To Stay In Kauai For Nightlife
Hanalei is on the North Shore and is probably the most popular area for tourists on the island. Youll find a huge variety of travelers in this area, from families to surfers, and people looking for a luxury experience. This is the ideal place when youre trying to decide where to stay in Kauai for nightlife, as its filled with restaurants, bars, and the kind of travelers who want to party.
But that isnt all that this destination has to offer. Its also good for families, solo travelers, and people who want to experience Kauais local culture too. Best Kauai Resorts For Families
Kauai is probably the most laid back Hawaiian Island. While there may not be as much to do on Kauai theres no shortage of beaches, hiking, and other outdoor activities that appeal to kids. There also arent a ton of beach resorts on Kauai but there are a few truly fabulous family friendly resorts on Kauai.
Also, I feel like this list needs a bit of a disclaimer: pretty much anywhere you go in Hawaii is going to be kid friendly. Hawaii is not a stuffy destination. The most posh and expensive hotels on the island cater to children quite amazingly and unless youre at the adults only pool , youll always find kids boogie boarding in the waves, bobbing around in the pool, and having dinner with their families. That being said, this list includes resorts that may appeal to children especially due to their pools or kids clubs, and parents due to their locations and convenience factors.
: The Kauai Marriott Resort is probably my #1 pick for families visiting Kauai. Its PACKED with amenities that are perfect for kids. This place has one of the largest pools in Hawaii and also has a separate kids pool with a waterslide. There is plenty of dining on property and nearby and the resorts location in Lihue makes it super convenient to the airport but also exploring the north and south sides of the island. Pricing starts at $300/night. Book a room directly with Marriott here and read hundreds of reviews here.
Enjoy The Views At Waimea Canyon State Park

Waimea Canyon has long been referred to as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, and for good reason!
The Waimea Canyon State Park has just as much to see and do as its sister canyon on the mainland. And its one of the top attractions on Kauai.
At $10 per car to enter, this experience is a steal no matter how you look at it! There are trails for amateur hikers, as well as harder treks for the more experienced hiker.
If you want to stay in the car and enjoy the scenery, you can do that too.
Make sure to at least stop at the lookout points, or risk missing some of the most gorgeous rainbows and interesting plants and animals in the US!
And I totally recommend continuing up to Kokee State Park!

So Ultimately Where Is The Best Place To Stay In Kauai
Any kind of singular recommendation is going to be biased but I still think that staying in the North Shore and in the Princeville area is the best place to be.
My argument is that you’d most likely only go to the Waimea Canyon on the West Side once on your trip and while South Shore is nice, I still prefer the hidden local beaches in the north.
There’s a real comfortable charm and alluring paradise to being in Princeville, and seeing the start of the Napali Coast that has had me back twice already.

Backpackers Vacation Inn & Hostel North Shore Hawaii
One of the best places to stay on Oahu if youre travelling Hawaii on a budget is the North Shore. To us, it also felt far more authentic than Honolulu and perfect for those looking to surf or snorkel. With so many things to do on North Shore that are backpacker budget-friendly, staying here is ideal as you avoid the crowds of Waikiki but will still gain a true taste of the Hawaiian way of life.
Backpackers Hawaii is ideal for those visiting Oahu on a budget thanks to a variety of room types to suit all travel styles. Their accommodation options include dorm beds, private beach studios, and even cabins pretty much on the beach. Their accommodation is also nearby of one of the best waterfall hikes on Oahu Waimea falls as well as just minutes from the beach.
To us, its one of the best hostels in Hawaii as not only do dorm beds start from just $30 per night they even offer free snorkel gear, saving you extra dollar! As a tip, it is also only 6 minutes walk from one of our favourite places to eat on Oahu Aji Limo food truck. An absolute must if youre visiting the North Shore!

Hilton Garden Inn, Kauai Wailua Bay location is right next to Lydgate Beach Park between Lihue and Wailua. Check out the latest prices and more details.
There are a playground and a play bridge within walking distance, which would be perfect for an after-dinner excursion for my boys when I dont want to have to wash yet another set of swim trunks.
Lydgate Beach Park also has a kids swimming area that can be a great place to practice snorkeling before heading to one of the less-sheltered beaches.
Double queen rooms start around $169 per night but know that there is a $22 per night resort fee added to the cost of the room before taxes.
Still, for the proximity to all things Garden Island, I feel like this is a steal of a deal!
2430 Hulemalu Rd, Lihue, HI 96766 245-9000

Staying On The North Shore

Including Princeville, Hanalei, and Kilauea
The North Shore of Kauai may be one of the most scenic places on the entire planet. There are a variety of gorgeous beaches and the verdant mountains rising as a backdrop to the coastline make this entire stretch of the island seem like the real Hawaii youve envisioned before visiting. Its lush here because rainfall is higher than in other locations on the island, especially during the ‘winter’ months when the tradewinds pick up, so keep that in mind if youre opposed to more frequent rainfall during your visit.
Along the North Shore, youll find Princeville, where the majority of the North Shore luxury accommodations are located. Just beyond Princeville, youll discover the small surfing town of Hanalei, with its bustling shops and a variety of small restaurants.
The accommodations in this area are pretty luxurious and may just be some of the nicest on the island, but that luxury also comes with a higher price tag. The North Shore is also more secluded from the remainder of the island, which is something to additionally consider if you plan to do a lot of exploring on Kauai while youre visiting.
A few popular properties on the North Shore of Kauai are the Hanalei Bay Resort, the St Regis Princeville Resort, and the Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas.

Kalalau Trail Napali Coast State Park
The famous NaPali coastline is a highlight of Kauai. The Kalalau Trail is a 22-mile round trip hike, the only way to truly explore this coastline up close. This is by far the best hike, not just in Kauai, but all of Hawaii. Recognized as one of the worlds most dangerous hikes with 11 miles of continuous ascents and descents which include river crossings. The hike is grueling but pays off at the end. A stunning beach, caves, and an enormous valley with swimming holes to explore all sit at your fingertips. This hike is for experienced hikers and can be very dangerous, in particular during the river crossings. Is This A Realistic Budget
There will be two of us. We will be there for one week. We’re staying in a cottage, so we have a kitchen and will probably eat breakfast and dinner at home. Lunch will likely be at a casual restaurant or takeout/street food. We want to have one nice dinner out, and we will difinitely be having cocktails every night, sometimes at a bar, sometimes at home, sometimes both. We aren’t going to do any scheduled activities besides the helicopter tour– it’ll just be swimming, snorkeling, hiking, and just hanging out. Here’s our budget:
Groceries : 300
What do you think– too low? too high? just right?
I think you might be able to stay within your budget of $1260. We just spent 8 nights on Kauai and spent $55. for gas . We spent 4 days at the north shore – drove to Ke’e beach twice and to the lighthouse. Then headed to the South shore for 4 nights and while there, went to the end of the Waimea Canyon Road, into Lihue twice , and a drive up to Waimea Falls. You probably won’t want to drive more than that distance in a week so unless you have a real gas guzzler, I don’t think you’ll use $100 in gas.
I didn’t keep track of all grocery costs, but our first stop was $170. including a 12-pack of beer. With a few more stops throughout the week to restock, we probably ended up spending another $150.
In addition to beer/wine/liquor, Costco sells large bottles of pre-mixed drinks . Also agree that the farmer’s market is great place to buy local fruit and vegetables.
Have a great time!
Princeville The Coolest Place To Stay In Kauai
If you want a more upscale experience, then Princeville is one of the best places to stay in Kauai. Its located adjacent to the Hanalei Beach area and offers a quieter, more luxurious experience close to all the action. Princeville is filled with upscale beach resorts and intricately designed community of houses and condos, so the whole area has a pleasingly elegant aesthetic.
Stan Jones
And this area still offers easy access to all the beach attractions of Kauai too. Its located along Pali Ke Kua Beach and there are several other popular beaches in the area too. Just be careful as the beaches generally arent safe in winter and some of them dont have lifeguards.
So, if you arent a strong swimmer, its probably safer to stay on the shore. The shopping and eating in this area are awesome as well, which makes it a great choice when youre deciding where to stay in Kauai with kids.
