Top Things To Do In Korcula With Kids
- Post comments:
Locally referred to as Korula and pronounced Kor-chew-la, this beautiful Croatian island is a great choice for families. There are plenty of things to do in Korcula with kids and you can make your stay as adventurous, educational or relaxing as you like.
Its easy to understand why the old town is often referred to as mini Dubrovnik. The perfectly preserved medieval town and its stone-walled streets are surrounded by high defensive walls and towers.
Unlike Dubrovnik however, Korcula is much quieter and has a calming sereneness to it. We visited Korcula after spending 4 nights in Dubrovnik and found it a welcomed contrast to the crowds of tourists and scorching heat.

Have Unique Tapas At Lole Wine Bar
If youve spent any amount of time along Croatias Dalmatian coast, you know that menus tend to offer the same appetizers over and over: marinated anchovies, octopus salad, prut, cheese, marinated shrimp.
However, Lole Wine Bar turns Croatian appetizers on their head, serving them in new and rearranged ways, always rotating, and served alongside an interesting selection of local wines. My suggestion? Come here for a NIGHT. Start with the lighter wines and work your way down! End with the nespole liqueur, tasting like marzipan.
Lole gets busy at night, and I highly recommend making a reservation for one night of your stay in Korula.
Visit St Marks Cathedral
An unmissable historical building, St. Marks Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral from the 15th century. It was built and painted by Italian and local masters in a Gothic and Renaissance style.
On the door pillars, you will notice the naked figures of Adam and Eve, and on the triangular gable cornice at the very top, there is some intriguing detail, specifically a two-tailed mermaid and elephant.
Inside, you can find the sarcophagus of St. Theodore, the protector of Korula, an icon of the Virgin from the 13th century, cannonballs and weapons from wars with the Ottomans, and paintings by the aforementioned Italian master Tintoretto.
The cathedral is located in the heart of the town, on the highest point which means it provides the most alluring view of Korula and the Adriatic Sea. It is not easy to go up, but it is well worth the effort.

Try Traditional Honey At Opg Komparak
One of the stops on our bike tour was at OPG Komparak, a shop serving local honeys, olive oils, and other specialties like jams and preserves. This is a great shop and a nice place to stop to try some unique flavors, including sage, mandarin, and forest honey. They offer tastings for 5 euros you can also book a visit to see the bee boxes.
Amusingly, we saw our beekeeper dance in the Moreka show a few hours after meeting him! Youll soon learn that Korula is essentially a small town, everyone knows everyone, and everyone has multiple side hustles in tourism.

Things To Do In Korcula With Kids
We spent 3 nights in Korcula and although we did lots, we also relaxed after our busy few days in Dubrovnik.
If you want to spend longer, there is certainly plenty to do. The island has lots to offer from beautiful coastal coves and bays for swimming and relaxing, to a wealth of history and educational attractions. And for the more adventurous, popular activities include cycling, hiking, boat rental and diving.
Other Things To Do In Korcula
I had researched and planned to visit the paradise island of Mljet. Considered to be one of the most beautiful of the Croatian island, the unspoilt national park is covered in dense forest and has two beautiful salted lakes.
Getting to Mljet is easy using the high-speed ferries but the day we planned to go was when the storm hit. We were advised that the sea conditions were not good and I didnt want to risk us getting seasick so chose not to go.
I guess I have a good reason to go back!

Types Of Accommodation On Korcula Island
Across Croatia in recent years, there has been a lot of investment in hotel accommodation. Id still say hotels are a bit of a mixed bag on the island. There are some good hotel options particularly in and around Korcula Town. This includes the stylish decorated The Fabris Luxury Inn and Hotel Korsal which is located just opposite the main town beach.
Many visitors to the island choose to stay in private accommodation in the form of rooms, apartments, houses and villas. If you look at AirBnB or Booking.com you will find plenty of options. There are several benefits of choosing private accommodation over a hotel. This includes: being better value, more space, more likely to have an outside area and sea-views and it gives you the option to self-cater.
If you prefer to camp there are several options on the island, as well as on the nearby Peljesac peninsula. Wild camping is prohibited in Croatia mainly I think due to the risk of fire.
Late Lunch On The Lovely Nigra Terrace
Nigra stole my heart! It is a must find! Located just outside of the Western entrance with a stylish terrace perfectly situated along the waters edge. Stop by around 6pm and you will discover as I did, excellent service, tasty fish specials, a wonderful sunset view across the old town and to top it off a solo guitarist to play everything out what could be dreamier?
Korcula is home to the delicious Grk wine! You must order this with your meals as its hard to find elsewhere in Croatia and if you do you can be sure the price will be a LOT higher!

Dine At The Michelin Guide Restaurant Filippi
If youre looking for high end food and service Filippi is worth remembering! This Michelin rated restaurant is full every night and for good reason. I suggest arriving early if you want one of the good seats on the tree-lined terrace over looking the blue water.
What to order? Personally given the location I would choose the fresh fish every time , delicious white Grk and a table by the sea!
Visit Marco Polos House And Museum
It is believed that the legendary explorer, writer, and traveler Marco Polo was born in Korula. The house was rebuilt, but it preserved its old charm.
This museum allows you to delve into the life of this remarkable explorer and his travels. Through seven remarkable scenes and surprisingly realistic puppets, this museum showcases the life of Marco Polo.
Here you can also find shops with over four hundred authentic products. In addition, you can get some great views of Korula here!

Go Wine Tasting At Lumbarda Vineyards
Korcula is known for its spectacular vineyards. How does a day of exploring winerys with jaw-dropping views over orchards, villages and the blue sea sound? I am a complete fan! I loved this experience so much I have been on two occasions the Lumbarda village is just THAT stunning and easily accessible from the old town.
Vitis and Popic vineyards in the Lumbarda village are literally next door to each other and are the easiest to visit if staying in the old town. Travel by taxi boat, cycle or taxi .
For solos wanting company and a bit of fun I couldnt recommend the Lumbarda bike and wine tour enough! This is the first trip I took and thoroughly enjoyed the whole cycling-through-vineyards experience and meeting like minded people over a glass or three of wine!
Cons For Staying Here
- Sveti Nikola is the first row to the sea, where you can stay in waterfront accommodation with the sea just a few metres from your door. How heavenly is that!
- Cvjetno Naselje is the second row and the views from the houses along this street are some of the best in Korcula, as they overlook the stunning Old Town.
- From either street, you are just a very short walk from the town and despite being so close to the centre, this area remains quite quiet.

Snorkel In The Crystal Clear Waters
On this Korcula snorkeling trip youll visit the surrounding islands which have insanely clear water and beautiful shores lined with beaches and green trees.
On board your luxury boat you can sip on wine between snorkeling spots, see where the stone used to build the White House came from and see a shipwreck.
Hotel Korula De La Ville
I stayed at Hotel Korula de la Ville, right in the heart of Korula Town, which I loved. Korula Tourism hosted us in this hotel for three nights, and it is exactly the kind of place I recommend to my readers! Safe, well-located, beautiful, tons of style, and surprising value for money.
Hotel Korula de la Ville is the oldest hotel on the island, dating back 100 years. Its grand and elegant, newly renovated, all shades of periwinkle and white. Its located in the best place possible: right in the old town, overlooking the water. The terrace outside is a wonderful place to relax.
Ordinarily this would be considered a four-star hotel but theres no elevator. As a result, they can only consider themselves a three-star hotel and charge three-star prices. If you dont mind walking up stairs , its excellent value for money.
Breakfast is included, with spectacular morning views from the terrace, and they offer free parking right in the heart of Korula Town. That is UNHEARD OF!

Find A Wonderful Secluded Beach Cove
The water around Korcula island and even in the town is some of the bluest I have ever seen, but the jury is out on what is classed as a beach. Its common to find beaches that are nothing more than rocks or a slither of pebbles between the road and sea particularly along the western edge of town .
But dont worry, I found the secret! If you walk a little further, past Nigra restaurant youll come across a row of houses and a small church THEN keep your eyes peeled for a narrow passage of steep steps that lead down to a tiny but perfect beach cove voila!
PUPNASKA LUKA BEACH: A note on the most talked about beach in Korcula while this natural beach is said to be the best in Korcula, it is a good 30 minute drive from the old town. Youll need a set of wheels or a fairly expensive taxi ride to get there and bear in mind popular spots are often the most crowded!

Day Trip To Lush Mljet National Park
Korcula is so wonderful there is really very little reason to leave it! But if youre here for a week or more you could consider going to lush Mljet Island. Mljet has a totally different landscape and vibe. The entire west side of the island is a National Park and home to two salt water lakes, forests, walking paths and a tiny island. This is where I recommend spending your time, it really is very stunning! You could even climb up to Montocuk to capture this same viewpoint.
Its possible to travel independently to Mljet via the ferry from Korcula old town to the town of Pomena, on the edge of the National Park, where you will purchase an entry ticket and map.
