Where To Stay In Paris 4 Neighborhood Recommendations

Where to Stay in Paris 4 Neighborhood Recommendations including the Marais, near the Louvre, St. Germain and Ile St. Louis.

One of the biggest challenges in planning a trip to Paris is deciding where to stay. Not only do you need to determine if you want a hotel room, apartment rental or a hostel, but then you have to choose a part of the city in which to stay.

Paris is full of wonderful neighborhoods, and different parts of the city appeal to different people. Where you should stay depends on the goals of your trip and what you like to do when you travel.

A few general recommendations:

  • Dont stay outside of the 20 arrondissements.
  • Do pick a hotel thats in a good location and central to what you want to do, whether its eating, art museums or just hanging out.
  • Dont stay near the airport .
  • If you plan to use public transit, consider where the nearest metro stop is in relation to your hotel/rental. You may be in a great neighborhood, but it can be a pain if you have to walk 10 minutes to get to the metro.
  • Dont choose a hotel because its near a certain attraction. For example, staying near the Eiffel Tower is actually pretty far away from most other attractions.
  • Do have reasonable expectations. Parisian hotel rooms are small and expensive. There are beautiful, luxurious hotels in Paris but you must be willing to pay.
  • Do consider an apartment rental and check out my recommendations in my free Paris e-book.

Public Transportation In Paris

Marais best shopping addresses in Paris and Where to stay ...

Parisian public transportation works quite well and its one of the safest in the world. Trains usually arrive on time, buses are clean, and I havent experienced metro being too hot like it often happens in London.

The metro runs Mon.-Thurs. and Sun. from 5:30 a.m. to 1:15 a.m., and Fri.-Sat. from 5:30 a.m. to 2:15 a.m. That means that if youre out in a club, youll have to take a cab home or wait until dawn to take the first train back.

You can purchase your single tickets at the station , but the machine will only take debit cards and coins. When boarding Paris buses, youll need exact change. Tickets are sold exclusively via self-service machines and not at Information desks. The staff is there only to answer questions and provide information on schedules.

Warning: Never purchase tickets from vendors on the street or hovering around the entrance to stations. You will see that a lot. These tickets might be counterfeited and could cost you a fine.

Few Extra Tips:

  • Get yourself a metro map. These are available free of charge from any metro information booth.
  • If youre in the city for a few days get a Paris Visite Pass. This pass gives you unlimited travel in Paris . While its slightly more expensive than Navigo, that locals use, you can just buy it. For Navigo youll need to provide a photo of yourself and formally apply for the card, so its not worth a hassle unless youre staying for a few months or returning often.

St Germain & The Latin Quarter: Best Of The Left Bank

St. Germain offers a central location and a classic Parisian feel with its streets overflowing with history as the neighborhood where Ernest Hemingway liked to hang out in the cafes and Picasso painted his famous Guernica. Many famous artists and writers enjoyed drinking coffee along the river, although now theyve moved on to other areas as its become far too pricey.

Its one of the citys classiest districts, filled with illustrious museums, upscale galleries, designer brand stores, eclectic eateries and Paris oldest church, the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Pres. The area is also ideal for practicing the art of flaneur .

St. Germain is definitely worth the splurge if you can manage it, putting you just a short walk from Musée dOrsay, with its collection of impressionist art and the gorgeous Luxembourg Gardens, perfect for relaxing on a bench and enjoying some old-fashioned people watching.

If its not in your budget, consider the Latin Quarter, which also offers some enticing areas as a lively neighborhood primarily home to students, with La Sorbonne, the citys oldest university found here. Its centrally located in the fifth arrondissement on the left bank bordering the river, with Rue Mouffetard, a fabulous market street an ideal spot for sampling a wide range of tasty local eats.

Of course, you will find many chic restaurants and delicious bakeries around this area, so its one of the best places to stay if youre looking for a true Parisian neighborhood in paris!

Please note that, surprisingly, in the evening the nightlife is not busting there, so If you are searching for an area that would be convenient to go out in the evening, I recommend taking a look at Le Marais instead. Most of these recommendations are hotels with Eiffel Tower view, so choose your favorite wisely:

Hotels In Latin Quarter:

Where to stay in Paris?

Les Rives de Notre DameThe hotel is located in a perfect position just in front of a RERB station to the airport and a metro station. There are plenty of bars and restaurants just around the corner in the Latin Quarter. Despite all are tourists, you can eat decently at a low price. My room had a beautiful window view on Ile de la Citè and Notre Dame . All the staff was amicable and helpful. My room and my bathroom were not too small, compared to the typical size in other hotels in the center of Paris. The room heating was working well.

Hotel Montecristo Featuring a bar, Hôtel Montecristo is set in Paris, 1.9 km from Notre Dame Cathedral. The property is around 2.5 km from Opéra Bastille and 2.8 km from Pompidou Centre. The hotel features an indoor pool and a 24-hour front desk and free WiFi throughout the property.

Hotel Cluny Square The location is excellent: pretty close to Notre-Dame, a cozy bakery with delicious breakfast menu right in front of the hotel, it is very close to the metro station. Montmartre / 18th Arrondissement Where To Stay In Paris On A Budget

Montmartre is one of the most popular and gorgeous outer districts of Paris. Montmartre is actually a 130m-high hill, dominated by one of the most famous landmarks of Paris the white Sacré-Cur Cathedral. Montmartre used to be separate from Paris town where many poor and talented artists lived, that is why the atmosphere of this area is a little different! Many famous painters such as Pablo Picasso, Renoir, Edgar Degas, stayed and worked there in their own studio at the end of the 19th century.

In fact, I lived in the area for a long time and I can recommend it wholeheartedly if you do not mind taking a metro to the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower. Paris is very well connected with the metro and you will get to any important place in no time! If you want to be above Paris, surrounded by narrow and charming streets full of colorful houses, this is the best neighborhood to stay in Paris for you.

NOTE: Montmartre technically is located in the 18th arrondissement, but you can also search for accommodation in the 9th district, they are walking distance to each other and it is basically the same thing.

My recommendations for Montmartre are:

Hotel Caron De Beaumarchais

The decorations are typically Parisian and romantic, with an emphasis on antique furniture and floral prints. Hotel Caron de Beaumarchais is located in the 4th arrondissement, next to one of the neighborhoods main streets, Rue de Rivoli.

Where To Grab A Drink

Theres plenty of nightlife in Le Marais, as well. For some of the trendiest bars in the city, check out Candelaria on Rue de Saintonge. This restaurant originally appears to be a small taqueria spot serving up small bites.

But head through the secret back door, and youll step into a dark yet inviting bar that serves excellent cocktails and food. For another great cocktail option, try Little Red Door on Rue Charlot. This hip spot was voted one of the worlds best bars in 2018. There will most likely be a line to get in, so try to get there early!

Best Hostel In Paris: St Christophers Hostel The Canal

As hostels continue to innovate and turn into modern budget getaways for travelers of all ages, exceptional properties are popping up all over Europe. That said, unlike Lisbon or Berlin, Paris doesnt have any game-changing hostels.

However, there is one nice Paris hostel that I do recommend: St. Christophers Hostel on the canal. Its a relatively new hostel, built in 2008, and its airy and vibrant with impeccably clean dorms, large bathrooms, key card security, and a wild bar downstairs to meet fellow travelers.

St. Christophers is part of the Europes Famous Hostels chain, and Ive found all their hostels to be well maintained with a great social environment.

The location on Canal St. Martin is offbeat and fairly out of the way, but there are plenty of nice cafes, a grocery store, some Vietnamese restaurants, and three metro stops within a ten-minute walk.

St. Christophers has another location near Gare du Nord, and while I cant vouch for it personally, its worth checking out as well.

Some of the most expensive neighborhoods in Paris are the following:

Saint-Germain-des-Prés The chic Parisian neighborhood is full of cafés and restaurants frequented by intellectuals, writers, filmmakers, and philosophers back in the day.

Eiffel Tower It should be no surprise that surrounding neighborhoods near and around the Eiffel tower are some of the most expensive in Paris. The price tags are slightly higher in accommodations, restaurants, shopping compared to the rest of the neighborhoods in Paris.

Avenue Montaigne Although Avenue Montaigne is technically not a neighborhood in Paris, it is one of the wealthiest streets in the city. You can find some of the most expensive luxury brands.

Trocadéro The seizième arrondissement houses some of the most expensive real estate in Paris, such as the Auteuil villas, a luxury gated community with chateau-like houses.
