Riomaggiore: Where To Stay In Cinque Terre For Romance
The first stop on most Cinque Terre itinerary is Riomaggiore, the closest town to the gateway La Spezia. If youre coming to Cinque Terre after a long flight, then make this your base. In my opinion, it has the most romantic setting.
It is also the starting point of hikers who are here to trek the 75 miles of trails along the coast. Riomaggiores main attraction is the Via dellAmore trail, translated to mean The Way of Love. Unfortunately it has been closed due to a major landslide since 2012.

Which Cinque Terre Village To Choose For An Overnight Stay
If you have decided to spend a vacation in the Cinque Terre, it is not particularly important where you stay overnight. Some tourists prefer to stay in only one village of the Cinque Terre for the whole trip, and they visit the surroundings and get to the neighboring villages by train. For example, Monterosso is only 15 minutes from Riomaggiore. Other tourists prefer to move from one village to another during their stay in Liguria.
While on the subject of overnight stays, Corniglia seems the less desirable of all the Cinque Terre villages from this point of view because it is located high on the hill and to get back from the station you need to go uphill. Monterosso is the village with a sand beach Vernazza and Manarola are considered the most beautiful villages of the Cinque Terre. If you want to save, use the search engine and select All Cinque Terre hotels based on price. By the way, dont worry if a hotel does not have air conditioning. It means that it is not necessary, because it is not hot at night.

If you only have one day, it is totally possible to visit Cinque Terre on a day trip from either Genoa area or the Tuscany region. It will be a long day, but it can be done. Just make sure to choose which villages are of high priority to you and then spend the most time in those places.
There are so many things to do in Cinque Terre, and you should narrow down exactly what you want to do before deciding how long you want to spend.
If you are looking to spend a few days, we recommend spending 2 nights and 3 days minimum to really experience what Cinque Terre has to offer. If you are visiting the Ligurian Coast as part of our 10 Day Italy Itinerary, then we recommend at least 1-2 nights, depending on your priorities elsewhere in Italy.
We absolutely love the Ligurian Coast and could easily spend a week seeing all this part of Italy has to offer. However, due to the popularity of the area and the higher cost of Cinque Terre accommodations, if you can spend 2 nights, we highly recommend it!

Monterosso Al Mare Italy: The Complete Guide
Pimlapat Thanompan / EyeEm / GettyImages
The largest town of the Cinque Terre, Monterosso al Mare , is alternatively called the liveliest and the least charming of the five famous villages. It’s the northernmost town in the chain, making it a logical base for visitors arriving from the north and set to explore the Cinque Terre. The town is divided into two partsthe old town and the new town, also called Fegina. These two halves are connected by a tunnel used by pedestrians and the few cars that enter and exit the town.
The oldest parts of Monterosso likely date to the 11th century. The ruins of a medieval fortress, including three former watchtowers built to spot invading pirates, still stand in the old town, or Borgo Antico. The new area, Fegina, dates from the late 19th and into the 20th century when the train line arrived in the Cinque Terre and brought these sleepy villages into the modern world. Today, apart from serving as a gateway to the Cinque Terre, Monterosso al Mare is known for having the only sandy beach in the area.
Restaurants And Bars In Monterosso Al Mare
As the largest village in the Cinque Terre, you are spoiled for choice when it comes to restaurants, lunch spots and places to grab a drink. Personally, we enjoyed the leisurely walk, menu peruse and spontaneous decision after the sun had set but wanted to share some of our favourites here, broken down into the new and the old town:

Manarola: Peace Quiet And Panoramas In The Cinque Terre
If you loved the sound of Corniglias serenity but werent so keen on those 350 steps, Manarola may be an equally enchanting choice. This village is the Cinque Terres second smallest, having once been part of Riomaggiore. Today, its considered a village in its own right albeit a pint-sized one!
Manarola is particularly ideal for those who want to enjoy the famous Cinque Terre hikes, all the while taking in pinch-yourself views. The village itself is enchanting, and the surrounding landscapes just add to the wow factor. You certainly wont regret choosing Manarola for where to stay in the Cinque Terre!
Unfortunately, Manarola doesnt have a beach, however, it does have a very picturesque harbor that you can explore. As it is the second smallest village, it offers fewer amenities such as shops as restaurants, but youll still find some traditional options to enjoy. Plus, its within walking distance to Riomaggiore if youre looking for more options. For a more peaceful choice, beautiful and still close to the action of Riomaggiore, look no further than petite Manarola.

Things To Know About Hotels In Cinque Terre
Accommodation is very limited here as the Cinque Terre towns are tiny. Plus Cinque Terre is a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site, so new construction is not allowed.
Because of the popularity of the area, Cinque Terre hotels are overpriced. Even simple, old-fashioned guesthouses are priced around $150/night. I recommend booking your accommodation as early as possible as they get filled up very fast, especially in summer.
If you plan on renting a car in Italy, be aware that most Cinque Terre towns only have pedestrianized streets and parking is a nightmare. Few hotels have carparks and even if they do, theyre expensive . Its best to park your car in La Spezia or Levanto.
TIP: If the prices of hotels in Cinque Terre are beyond your budget, I recommend staying in La Spezia, Levanto or Portovenere. Read these alternative accommodation options.
Monterosso Al Mare: The Largest Town To Stay In The Cinque Terre
Another of the most popular places to stay is the Cinque Terre town of Monterosso. This village is the most westerly of all of the villages of the Cinque Terre and is the first youll stumble upon if driving in Italy from Milan or Genoa.
Monterosso is the largest of all of the villages of the Cinque Terre and is divided up into a newer and an old town section, which is linked by an underground tunnel. As a result of this, it has the widest range of accommodation options and can be the most budget-friendly of the towns along the Cinque Terre.
Some visitors to the Cinque Terre feel that Monterosso is the least authentic of the five. Its the most accessible by car, which makes traveling more convenient but also eats into some of the traditional charms. That said, its still pretty delightful with its abundant lemon trees and anchovies.
Another big tick for Monterosso is that it boasts the Cinque Terres best beach, Fegina Beach . With a long stretch of soft sand and ubiquitous umbrellas, its a fabulous place for spending a few hours soaking up the sun along the Italian Riviera.

Do Some Souvenir Shopping
There are a number of lovely little artisanal shops throughout the five villages, selling everything from pesto and wine, to clothing and bowls. One such shop that absolutely shouldnt be missed is the delightful Fabbrica d’Arte Monterosso.
Family-owned and run, since 1982 theyve created uniquely beautiful handmade ceramics and 100% hand-printed linens, which are now sold from one of two shops in the centre of Monterossos old town.
Top tip | If picking up local foodie treats is more your sort of thing, be sure to pop into the Pesto Lab using basil produced upon the hills of the Cinque Terre, overlooking the sea.
As one would imagine, they sell all sorts of pesto products, as well as jars of locally-caught anchovies, olive oil, pasta sauces, wine and salty olives. All the good stuff!
Alternatively, if youd like to learn how to make pesto yourself, you can join a pesto making class during your time in Monterosso. See more information here.
