Construction For Mount Pleasant Development Can Be Delayed Patriots Point Board Says
Boutique lodgings would be permitted in “community scale commercial” areas where town officials determined development should be more focused on serving nearby residents. Mount Pleasant recently changed its definition of a boutique hotel to a property with 25 or fewer rooms, down from a maximum of 50.
There are five community scale “hubs” currently recommended as appropriate for boutique hotels:
- Belle Hall/Long Point Road area
- Seaside Farms at the Isle of Palms Connector
- The intersection of Chuck Dawley and Coleman boulevards
- The intersection of Highways 17 and 41 and
- The Republic Tract on Highway 41.
Along with those hubs, boutique hotels could also be built anywhere a full-size hotel is permitted.
At a planning committee session Jan. 3, council member G.M. Whitley said that establishing the new hotel rules was really “making a decision about what Mount Pleasant is going to be long-term.”
Whitley spoke about striking a balance between welcoming visitors and serving the needs of residents.
“If we wanted to live in a tourism mecca, we would have moved downtown,” Whitley said.
The zoning changes are for the entire town of Mount Pleasant, but the public comments at council’s Jan. 11 meeting only pertained to one site: a property on Ben Sawyer Boulevard that used to house the secondhand furnishings store Page’s Thieves Market.

We didnt want to fight the traffic or worry about parking downtown for every meal, so we chose to stay close to our hotel. Needless to say, we were not disappointed in the slightest! We found some of the best restaurants in Mount Pleasant, SC!
Our favorite brunch was Vicious Biscuit.

Seriously, yall. Id book another trip to Charleston just to eat at Vicious Biscuit again. This was, by far, my favorite meal of the entire trip. I ordered the The Fat Boy because well, Charleston is all about some pimento cheese. So I needed to try their house made pimento cheese also topped with fried crispy chicken covered in house made honey drizzle. My husband ordered The Babe is a biscuit with bbq sauce, bacon, and pulled pork. Delish.
The grand prize winner was the biscuits and gravy my kids ordered. Biscuits and gravy are a comfort food that, in my humble opinion, rarely lives up to my step-moms. But this was unbelievable! Its hard to impress me, and WOW, I kept going back for more.
They also have a really cool bar with complimentary flavored butters and house made jams.

Mt Pleasant Or West Ashley
Ideally, we would love to stay in the Historic District, but the prices are too high. Which is better, West Ashley or Mt. Pleasant? We will have a rental car. Can we drive to the HD, park and walk?
Staying in Mt Pleasant is quickest to get into the historic district.Consider any hotels just over the bridge.The Quality Inn and HI Express would be a good place to start.
Just plan on parking in one of the garages.I’ve never known them to be completely full.At least the hotel parking in Mt Pleasant is free.
Mt. Pleasant, at the base of the Ravenel Bridge will be just fine.
You can also look along Lockwood Dr. .
Ripley Marina will be close, as well.
Parking is not usually a problem, plenty of garages scattered around town.
My. Pleasant would be fine. The only place you might check in West Ashley is the Holiday Inn at the foot of the Ashley River Bridge. It’s the round one and has all interior rooms and a pool. It is very close.
Keep in mind that not all hotels in Mt. Pleasant are close to historic district. You want something listed as Patriot’s Point area.
What about King Street, the Hyatt. Is that area safe? I’ve read mixed reviews

Its plenty safe but you will walk almost two miles in the heat to the heart of the historic District.In the summer I had rather start walking from a garage IN the historic district.
Yep, Hyatt is a long way from where you will want to be, better will be Mt. P.
