Wander Along The Arvanitia Promenade
The Arvanitia promenade is an idyllic coastal walking trail that leads along the outskirts of old Nafplio. The 1km route can be enjoyed year-round and takes you on a journey past spectacular natural scenery.
The views of the Argolic Gulf from here are second to none. Halfway along the trail, you can ascend a small stone staircase to the church of Panagitsa. This little structure has been built inside a cliff face.
Very few people know about the tiny churchs existence and so it is seldom crowded. The white and blue washed church is beloved among locals.
It was actually used as a secret school during the Turkish occupation on account of its hidden location! Its architecture is more reminiscent of what you expect to see in the Cyclades than the Peloponnese.

Where To Stay In Naflio Area

Hi – My husband and I are leaving for Greece in a week. We were originally going to spend the majority of our time on the islands and just a few days on the mainland. As we look at weather and wind now, we may want to spend more time on the mainland, and are intrigued by Nafplio. We would love advice on the most picturesque parts of town to stay in, as well as beach areas that are not too developed/organized.
Many thanks,
If you are going to be in Nafplio, the Old TOwn is considered the most beautiful town in all of Greece . This wonderful website is THE best source not only for Nafplio but the entire surrounding area – I urge you to click on EVERY link.
The “Beach” link gives good info on my little fave, Asini — a cove right by a seldom-visited ruin, which on the other side, has an almost UN-visited beach. Tolo, the most-visited beach, is highly-organized for package tourism, so can look bleak yet overbuilt, off-season. If for some reason you do not want to stay in Old Town, here’s a cute place by Asini, that is steps off the sand & just a 15 minute drive to heart of Old Town.
Another Nafplio-file and longtime TA contributor, “stanbr” has a foto album of Nafplio’s charms, and ALSO a sampling of pix of local-area highlights .

Old Town Nafplio In Greece
The charming town of Nafplio is often considered to be one of the most romantic places in Greece.
The pedestrianized center means that you can stroll the pretty alleyways and admire the colorful bougainvillea flowers to your hearts content, and the overall ambience is relaxed and laidback. It’s no wonder that Athenians visit Nafplio for weekend getaways!
I’ve been living in Athens since 2015, and have visited Nafplio perhaps a half a dozen times on various day trips and weekend breaks. The last time I went to Nafplio was in January 2022, which explains the jeans and the jacket in the photo of the famous Bourtzi below.
If you’re visiting Nafplio in summer , you’ll only need shorts and a T-Shirt and you’ll probably still think it’s too warm! The Nafplio weather is typically hot and dry during the tourist season .

Revel In The Views From The Top Of Palamidi Castle
Palamidi castle sits atop a steep hill and can be seen from all corners of the city. It watches protectively over Nafplio in the same way that the crumbling remnants of the Acropolis still guard Athens. Reaching Palamidi means ascending 857 stairs. However, the breathtaking panoramas that await you at the top make it worth the workout.
The sprawling castle and fortress complex was built by the Venetians in the 1700s. Centuries later, the site saw the occurrence of many battles between the Greeks and the Turks in their fight for independence.

When To Visit Nafplio
Every season to visit the sightseeings and explore the old town. In spring it’s even better as the bougainvilleas bloom in the alleys and create a wonderful backdrop for photos.
Summer is not the ideal time to visit the sightseeings as the high temperatures will make you feel uncomfortable. If you want to stay near the beach, it’s better to stay outside Nafplio or Tolo, as the city doesn’t have direct access to Arvanitia which is the closest one.

A Little History Of Nafplio
Nafplio, like much of Greece, has a long history along with fascinating links to Greek mythology. The city takes its name from Nafplios, son of Poseidon.
Nafplios bayside location and natural defenses made it an important strategic location for trade and commerce. It is for this reason that the city was invaded and captured time and again. Nafplio has existed under Ottoman, Frankish, Venetian, and Greek rule. It was made the capital of the modern Greek state in 1823 and remained as such until 1834 when the Greek capital was moved to Athens.
Where To Stay In Nafplio
The Aetoma Hotel is a very lovely small hotel in a perfect location in Naplio. We enjoyed our 3 night stay last May and would stay again in a heartbeat. The care, kindness, and hospitality received was beyond excellent! Check it out.
We, also, stayed at the Aetoma Hotel and I concur with everything Carol said. I believe the same people own the well-rated Pension Mariana however, in my opinion, it’s better to be located down in town than up on a hillside.
We spent four nights in the Amphitryon Hotel, just west of the old town overlooking the bay, and liked it. A short walk in one direction to the pedestrian streets and squares with eating, shopping, and people-watching. A short walk the other way to the beginning of the long path around the peninsula to the beaches on the south side. The room was comfortable and breakfast excellent. Except for the breakfast, the restaurant and bar weren’t open in late October, but alternatives were nearby.
To enable us to give the best & most suitable advice, you cannot be quite so terse why not share what your exact dates are, and your preferred budget range per night for hotels. Also, any physical limitations .
I’ve stayed here three times, once alone, once with high school students, and once with my husband. It’s a great place, wonderful rooms and a killer view of the bay!
