Trying to find accommodation in New York City can be a painstaking process given the large number of hotels and neighborhoods to stay in. This is a city of over 10 million people. Its massive and there is a lot of choice.
As someone who spent years living and working in New York City, Ive stayed in a wide variety of places here. Ive Couchsurfed, stayed in cheap hostels, cheap hotels, expensive hotels , B& Bs, pod hotels, friends couches, Airbnbs, and everything in between.
There are a lot of things to consider when figuring out where to stay in NYC that Google simply cant tell you.
Today, I want to break down the best neighborhoods in New York City and the best accommodations in each of those neighborhoods so you can pick the right place to stay on your visit.
But, before I get into the specific neighborhoods and recommended places to stay while there, let me answer some of the most common questions I get asked about the city:
What is the best neighborhood for budget travelers? If youre visiting NYC on a budget, youll find the cheapest places outside Manhattan in Astoria or Williamsburg. If you want to stay in Manhattan, the Lower East Side is quite affordable.
What is the best neighborhood in New York City for families? The Upper West Side is the best area of the city for families. While a bit more expensive, it has a lot to offer and its a lot quieter than anywhere else!
Upper East Side Best Neighborhood To Stay For Museum Lovers
The Upper East Side is definitely one of Manhattans wealthiest areas. Located between 59th and 96th streets to the north and south and the East River and Central Park to the east and west, it is a quieter area stay in comparison to Chelsea or Midtown.
Pros of Staying in
- Not evocative of the real old New York
Located on the west side of Manhattan between Midtown and Greenwich Village and close to the Hudson River. We loved walking around cobblestone streets, sitting in one of the trendy cafes sipping a latte, and just getting lost in the vibe that comes with being in this part of the Big Apple. People love it.
You must make sure to visit Chelsea Market and take a stroll over to Union Square where they have a great Greenmarket every Monday and a cool Christmas Market during the winter.
The High Line is still very fun with the incredible Hudson Yards development to the north and the vibrant and crazy nightlife of the Meatpacking district to the south. The Whitney has some great works of art and wonderful views. And there is some serious shopping around as well. There is a lot to do here without ever leaving the neighborhood.

Every corner of this district feels evokes the feeling of affluence, and this goes back to the time when New York was a Dutch jurisdiction known as New Amsterdam.
Shortly after the English took possession of the territory from Dutch colonies, wealthy families began settling in the Upper East, and this tradition remains to this very day.
This district is filled with interesting museums It is home to Museum Mile, including the world famous Metropolitan Museum of Art, or The Guggenheim, and a lot of less known museums as the Park Avenue Armory.
Park Avenue Armory is an arts space that used to house the Seventh New York Militia before being used by a combat regiment of the United States National Guard, and its soldiers used to be known as silk stockings infantrymen because they came from elite families.

Why Is Times Square One Of The Best Places To Stay In Nyc

Times Square is not our cup of tea but it is extremely convenient and central. Connections to all of Manhattan and Brooklyn are made easy with various subway lines running through or very close to Times Square.
But the main reason to choose a hotel in Times Square is value. Even if you visit NYC at Christmas, you are going to find value in hotels around Times Square.
You can pick up a super cheap room at a decent hotel for excellent value, especially during the latter parts of covid restrictions. These current prices wont last long once everything is back to normal but it is still an easier place to pick up a bargain due to high competition for budget hotels.

Most Trendy Neighborhood In Brooklyn: Dumbo
If youre looking for a trendy place to stay in New York City you need not look further than DUMBO .
Between the cobblestone streets and beautiful brick buildings, youll see why this is one of the best places to stay in NYC. Tons of the warehouses where repurposed into beautiful condos with striking views of the NYC skyline.

There arent too many hotel options in DUMBO, so youll need to fork over a pretty penny to stay here. My favorite hotel in the area is the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge.
