There is a surprising amount of shopping options in Newport! Bellevue Ave, Thames Street, and Broadway Street are filled with boutiques and New-England inspired retail.
My favorite stores for picking up unique gifts or nautical souvenirs are along Bowens and Bannisters Wharves.
First Beach
Newport residents are spoiled with soft, sandy white beaches.
The most popular are along Memorial Boulevard and aptly nicknamed First, Second, and Third Beach.
First Beach has more amenities and is within walking distance to the Cliff Walk and restaurants, including the hotspot Flos. Technically Second and Third Beach are in Middletown but most consider it Newport.
As an alternative, Gooseberry Beach is on the other side of town and less touristy. Going to this beach is also the perfect opportunity to explore scenic Ocean Drive. I recommend a bike ride route along Ocean Ave, through kite-flying Brenton Point State Park and out to Castle Hill.
On the return ride, take Harrison Ave to see the Newport Country Club golf course and peaceful farmlands, including Hammersmith Farm where Jackie Os family resided.

We Enjoyed The Hotel Location Right On The Beach We Found
We enjoyed the hotel location right on the beach, we found the locals to be so friendly and helpful. We felt safe despite being in the middle of the beach area during Halloween weekend. There were some rowdy young people but we were not interrupted by noise or anything. It was a quick walk to Balboa Ferry, and it was a fun side trip to check out the island and get a frozen banana. Mama Ds was a simple restaurant we passed by, turned out to be the best little treasure. Great service.

Where To Stay Near Newport
In September after visiting Mystic CT, we will be driving to Newport RI the next day. Where is an affordable nice place to stay near Newport? We are okay with Air BNB, B & B or hotels.
Middletown, but that’s a tough weekend as the Boat Show is in town.
I stayed this summer at the Comfort Inn in Middletown. It was across the street from First Beach and literally a 5 minute drive to Bellevue Ave in Newport, where the mansions are located. Some of the Middletown hotels are further away. I paid $179/night on weekdays, but it could be cheaper after Labor Day.
