Brought to life in 1749 by tobacco merchants, Alexandria still has some tobacco plantations on the rivers banks. With time it has evolved into a bustling city concerning more than trade, but politicking and social activities.

As a prosperous city, Alexandria goes beyond its developed infrastructure toward such once in a lifetime experiences such as the water taxi that starts from the waterfront at the end of King Street or Big Wheel Bikes at the Old Town. In addition, the city was ranked the Third Best Arts Destination Among Mid-Size Cities by AmericanStyle magazine that places Alexandria at the top of travel list as a destination for artistic inspirations. Due to this it offers a host of arts organizations like Torpedo Factory Art Center and Del Ray Artisans.

Along with cultural Alexandria goes the Duke Street business district that is more difficult to negotiate than the rest of the city. Packed with traffic and office blocks, this is a place of little interest for leisure tourists.

Things To Do In Old Town Alexandria Virginia

Of all the cities I have visited in the United States, Old Town Alexandria, Virginia is my favorite. My connection to Old Town formed when I first moved to the Washington, DC area after college my first real job was with an organization located a few miles north of the historic city center. Old Town Alexandria hosted countless happy hours and dinners with people who became my closest friends. Adam and I spent many happy evenings having dinner and walking along bustling King Street when we started dating. It was in Old Town Alexandria that we said our marriage vows and celebrated our first hours as husband and wife with family and friends. Theres an old idiom that says all road lead to Rome for me, all roads lead to Old Town Alexandria.

    Hotels In Old Town Alexandria

We will be going to Old Town Alexandria one weekend in May and want to be able to walk to all the sites and some local taverns. I was told by a friend that the Holiday inn select has the best location but, we are also considering the Morrison House due to the great reviews. Is the Morrison within walking distance ? Thanks for any suggestions.

The Morrison House is within walking distance of all Old Town. It is about four blocks from the Holiday Inn, but also in a wonderful area with lots of good restaurants nearby. The city tourism site has a good interactive map for finding places in Old Town.

The Embassy Suites has gotten some good reviews. It is on Diagonal road just across from the King Street metro. I think someone said they had a free shuttle into Old Town as well.

Holiday Inn is the best from a location perspective and you will pay for it as the hotle itself is just ok. Morrison is much nicer, very centrally located but it’s also a bit more expensive. if I had my choice I’d go Morrison first. I’d also think about the Residence Inn on Duke or the Hampton on King. Both are more towards the Metro stop but you can easily walk to everything on King Street and their prices are usually a little more reasonable.
