Where To Stay In Peniche

Where To Eat In Peniche

In The Mood For Peniche, Berlengas & Baleal | Tourist Attractions Portugal | Travel Video (2020)

Avenida do Mar by the harbour is the street where the best fish restaurants are, with a selection of inexpensive and tasty regional preparations on the menu.

Located on that avenue, Restaurante Rocha has allegedly one of the best Caldeirada in the city.

If you are vegetarian, we recommend the Kirana Cafe, close to Baleal. The menu is 100% vegetarian & vegan with many delicious dishes available.

If you are looking for an inexpensive and local option to eat at, consider the restaurant Tasca do Joel or directly at Pro Fresco which is literally in the fish market with an adapted restaurant.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Peniche

If youre after spending some time at the beach, then the best time to come is in the Summer months May to October. The average temperature is around 25 degrees with almost no rain. I would say that early Autumn and Spring are also good, but you wont be able to enjoy sunbathing then. In November you can still experience temperatures as high as 20 degrees and quite a lot of sunshine.

Typical Food In Peniche

Since Peniche is a fishing port, eating fish and seafood is a must. Fresh and prepared with mastery, you will not find better. Two typical local dishes we love are Caldeirada and Arroz de Marisco.

  • Caldeirada is a fish stew best described as the Portuguese version of bouillabaisse.

Its a mix of fish and seafood, spiced with a little Piri Piri chili. Every other town has its own recipe and in Peniche it will involve anglerfish, turbot, ray, dogfish and conger, all cooked with potato.

  • Arroz de marisco is a delicious seafood rice dish with prawns, crab, and shrimp.

Other seafood delicacies are the classic lobster soup and the omnipresent barbecued sardines.

A Weekend In Peniche: What To See And Do And My Impressions

Peniche a small town located around an hour drive from Lisbon. Its famous for its beaches, its laid back lifestyle and Berlengas a group of small islands. Its an ultimate surfers paradise and a nice place to relax and get away from the city. Many people had recommended it to me and I expected a lively resort with a lot of people. The reality was very surprising.

Portugal is a very small country and Lisbon is conveniently located, so its quite easy to make a weekend trip somewhere. I chose Peniche mostly due to so many good opinions I heard from friends and readers. One person told me that it was the best place on Earth for them. No wonder then that I imagined that Peniche is like eba, my hometown. I pictured it being full of tourists with loud arcades, clubs and expensive restaurants. When I finally got there, I found a quiet little town, where nothing much was going on. At first, I was wondering what I was supposed to do there. As it turned out, I had a lovely weekend there and I didnt even have enough time to fully enjoy it.

If youre looking for a short trip from Lisbon, then Peniche will be a great option. There are some really nice, local places in the town, where you can experience the slow, Portuguese lifestyle. The views are amazing, the food is great and affordable, and its so easy to get there. You will not regret spending some time in Peniche.

Its a 10-minute drive from the centre or around 40 minutes walk if youre up for the trek. You can stand here watching the surfers, but make sure to bring a jacket because it gets windy out here!

Peniche Portugal: A Tourism And Day

Peniche is a hard-working fishing town, which has transformed into a popular tourist destination due to the regions outstanding beaches. These beaches are famed for their unique surfing waves, and a high portion of visitors to the Peniche region come here to either surf or to learn how to.

The town of Peniche reflects the fishing industry, having a raw and ramshackle appearance, which has barely altered with the increase of tourism. Once beyond Penicheâs shabby appearance, there is a lot to love with fantastic seafood restaurants, interesting historic sights and of course the incredible surfing.

The maritime police station above the town walls

One of the regional highlights are the Berlengas islands, Portugalâs oldest nature reserve, and the location of the spectacular Sao Joao Baptista fort. The islands can be explored as a day trip from Peniche, with tour boats departing from the harbour. The non-touristy atmosphere and unkempt appearance means that Peniche is not for all, but if you wish to experience authentic hard-working Portugal, you will adore it.

Peniche Is Not Very Touristy

Peniche is not very touristy. The museum housed in the old political prison was interesting and the high street is a nice walk, but other than that there isn’t much to do in the town proper. The Berlengas archipelago is a must see. The “surfer beaches” are really nice, too.

The place has such a cool vibe, that I stayed for 2 weeks instead of 5 which were originally planned. I am a true believer that you love some places for the people you meet there. the hostel is run by a bunch of friends, who also cook super delicious pizza, play the music, surf with you, chat with you and create an amazing atmosphere, where people meet and from the day one become good pals. My warmest memories about Peniche will be partly because I stayed in this hostel 🙂

The Best Days in Peniche, Portugal End with Giant Seafood Platters Travel, Eat, Repeat

The most spectacular attraction of Peniche is by far its scenographic promontory it can be visited by car or by foot along its 6-kilometres trail. Climb to the top of Capo Carvoeiro, the highest peak of the promontory, in order to enjoy a spectacular view of Peniche and the near Berlengas island and to take pictures of its suggestive lighthouse.

It is also interesting to stroll around the center of Peniche, where you will meet the famous knitters of Peniche gathering in front of the Escola de Rendas de Bilros. It is incredible how they manage to make such elaborated and elegant crochet in such a short time.

It is also worth to visit the Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, a must stop for the yearly círios, that is to say pilgrimages dedicated to the marine tradition.

Where To Eat And Drink In Peniche

We actually used the opportunity that there was a fun fair in town at that time, so we ate there almost every night. We had some really good food, including sausages and cheese. Everything was very affordable.

One evening we went to eat at Tasca do Joel, which was recommended to us by one of my readers and I couldnt have been happier! The food was great and very fresh. The restaurant is a little out of the town center, but its really worth walking there to try the best seafood in town.

Igreja De So Leonardo

A couple of kilometres inland is the village of Atouguia da Baleia, which was actually the main seaport in medieval times until the harbour silted up and Peniche replaced it.

And theres a monument to this lost status, at the fabulous 13th-century Gothic church that was a place of burial for local noble families.

The chancel has a lovely ribbed vault, with floral keystones, and on the wall of the nave is a very rare bas-relief sculpted in the 14th century, as well as a Renaissance painting of St Leonard.

Fabulous Area By The Rocky Coast And Also Vast Sand Beaches

FABULOUS area by the rocky coast and also vast sand beaches. Atlantic winds blowing in keeping you cool in the bright summer sun and alive with Atlantic energy. Efficient seaside village , pretty marina, boat trips offered daily, enough eateries along the marina but best ones are behind, up in the little village streets. Tasca Bonino Verde where you can have a full lunch for 16 in two , and San Pedro Tasca where the rice and seafood is enough for two and you spend 17 per plate. They will make up a mixed root veg salad if you ask too. Dad serves and daughter cooks, mum does both. Dad will tell you Peniche History which is fascinating. Also Tasca de JOEL, recommended by our bnb Mercearia Boutique. A tiny bit too spruced up to be the traditional tasca but WAIT….the food is traditional and fabulously delicious. Decent price.A tiny fisherman’s lunch spot , no idea of address, we just came across it. WOW!Our best location on our Mum Daughter Road Trip .Would recommend both for family and for romantic coulpes, great spot to propose here!Sunsets are worth catering for here, take the time and a bottle of wine or a beer . You really feel welcome and at home in Peniche.

Best Things To Do In Peniche

Forte de Peniche

In Portugals Centro region, Peniche is a beach destination with many feathers in its cap. First, the raging sea and the lie of the land make this surf central. The best of many supreme beaches is Praia dos Supertubos, which has a tubular wave fit for big time international events.

Peniche has also been a port since the Early Modern Age, when a fort was constructed to defend it. This monument has an absorbing history, first as a maritime defence and then a prison during the Estado Novo regime in the 20th century. And since Peniche is still a fishing port, the fish and seafood could not be fresher. And on top of everything, you also have to make time for a voyage to the Berlingas Islands, a natural reserve off the coast.

Lets explore the best things to do in Peniche:

Igreja De Nossa Senhora Dos Remdios

Dont miss this splendid chapel during your visit to Cabo Carvoeiro. History goes that the original cult started as far back as the 12th century when an image of Holy Mary was carved into the rock of one of the caves by the water. On this site now stands a charming little compound with white outer walls and a courtyard with shadowing pines built in the 17th century. Go inside to see the white and blue panels depicting the life of Mary. This sanctuary is a pilgrimage destination during a religious festival in October.

Wander Around The Town Centre

End the day strolling through Ericeiras town centre. Get lost in the maze of narrow streets, and pass by the Praça da República, a tree-lined square surrounded by cafés and shops. Also known as Jogo da Bola, this is a lively meeting spot during the summer, hosting live music concerts. Around the area are also several seafood restaurants and trendy bars where you can stop for a drink, like Jukebox or Hemingways.

Food And Drink In Peniche

As you might expect, fresh seafood restaurants abound, serving up tasty sea bass, eel, and crab dishes, among others. If youre not a fish lover, consider some of the regional countryside specialties: favada à Portuguesa, a simmered dish of various cuts of pork and butter beans. Or game items, like rabbit, or even the simplest of possibilities, roast chicken.

We opted for an unusual choice, given our location on the sea. Os Americanos serves up not what you would expect from the name, but international cuisine, including Russian dishes. If you go, order the cheesy stuffed peppers appetizer with Bolognese-style sauce . The chicken cordon bleu was enough for two to share, and together with bread, polenta, and two adult beverages, our check came to $34. We didnt have room, but the New York style cheesecake looked like a dream.

When Is The Peniche Surf Season

Swell direction is predominantly from the north in Peniche. The various outcrops and sandbanks help to filter that into different spots for different levels. However, the changing of the seasons can shift things just enough to have a huge impact on Peniche waves. The barrels at Supertubos can look positively tame if youre surfing in Peniche in August, for example. Come December, you can rest assured theyll be roaring and overhead!

The Best Surf Spots In Peniche

One things for sure: Peniche has no shortage of surf spots! No ones ever gone hungry for a knee-high swell, a classic Atlantic A-frame, or even a zippy beach barrel in these parts. However, before you book a Peniche surf lodge and start getting excited, its worth getting a feel for the lay of the land. The Town And The Port Of Peniche

The rustic atmosphere has not been compromised by the growing tourism. Fishing is still a primary industry and Peniches fishing fleet returning to port in the morning is a sight to witness.

In the 17th century, Peniche was turned into a citadel and the sea walls still remain standing. The palms atop have been planted in the old earthworks and provide shade for a lovely walk.

How To Get Around Peniche

  • Foot: You can organise a whole surf trip in Peniche without having to worry about renting a car. Most of the town is totally walkable. Its center is typically Portuguese, with cobbled alleys and little pastel cafes. You might limit yourself to only a few of the Peniche surf breaks by doing this, however. Its a little far to stroll from Peniche itself to Baleal and the waves beyond the headland there.
  • Car: Car rentals in Portugal arent too expensive. We recommend you score a hire for the duration of your Peniche surfing trip, especially if you want to explore the real variety of breaks that run north and south up the coast. Centuaro Portugal have been brilliant for us in the past, and they often do 35% off from Lisbon Airport.
  • Taxi: A few taxi drivers serve the Peniche-Baleal areas. They tend to be a bit pricier than their compadres in Lisbon. Expect to pay around the 20 EUR mark to get from Peniche town to Ferrel.
