Things To Do In The Douro Valley
EXPLORE THE TOWNS & VILLAGES OF THE DOURO
During our time in the Douro Valley, we visited Pinhão and Peso da Régua.
Peso da Régua is a charming town nestled into the mountains, where we stopped for lunch and took in the most beautiful views along the lake. We didnt spend a lot of time here, but we did have one of my favourite meals in Portugal at Churrasqueira Rio Douro. Here, we were greeted by this fiery little Portuguese women, who was running around the tiny restaurant serving all the diners. We were told to pick a meat, which was served alongside plates of fries, rice, bread, and salad. The food was incredible, and the service was amazing. This massive meal only cost 16 euros!
Pinhão is a larger town, and a popular hub for visitors to the Douro Valley. We spent an an afternoon wandering around Pinhão, having ice cream by the waterfront, visiting the local shops, and going on a boat ride along the Douro Valley. In town, there are a variety of tour operators that you can walk about to and book a boat ride . I really loved this experience because it wasnt a tour no history, no stories. It was just a relaxing time where I was able to sit on the bow of a small boat and admire the beauty of the Douro Valley.
DRINK ALL THE WINE
Shocker: we drank lots of wine in one of the worlds most popular wine regions.
ADMIRE THE VIEWS
Luxury Villa Near Pinho
If you have a group of up to 8 people, you could rent an entire villa. This beautiful, modern house is designed to make the most of the landscape and has incredible views from the infinity pool or the indoor hot tub for when the weather is a bit cooler. Just a couple of minutes away from Pinhão by car, you have access to restaurants or you can simply stock up and use the kitchen or barbecue facilities.
Leave Porto Around 9 In The Morning
From Porto, I would leave around 9 so you can get to the Douro Valley around 10. From the city, it is about 1 hour driving to the start of the wineries.
I would start off with driving toward a beautiful viewpoint to get an idea of what youre getting yourself into. Id recommend going to the St. Leonardo de Galafura viewpoint.
This will allow for you to get a lay of the land and mentally prepare yourself for the beautiful views from the day to come.

Taking The Train From Porto To Pinhao
If you arent keen on renting a car, then your best option is to take the train from Porto central station. Pinhao is the main town in the Douro Valley and is located right in the middle of all the action.
This train ride is famous for its scenic views of Douro river. You have a direct IR connection every two hours starting at 7h15 until 19h30.
The cost of this train is 10 one way.
The problem youll have with taking the train is that you can only walk to the nearby wineries. I didnt see much in the way of taxis during any of my visit to the Douro Valley. There are plenty of wineries nearby to Pinhao so you have many options to choose from. There are two wineries inside the town of Pinhao that is only a few minutes walking from the train station. Other wineries with more expansive views and beauty will require a slightly longer walk .

The Best Wineries In Douro Valley For Views
I spent a few days in the Douro Valley and wasted no time. I went to many wineries along the way and enjoyed the breathtaking views of the Douro as well as delicious Ports and wines.
Just beautiful views and villages EVERYWHERE.
The Douro Valley is very similar to the Mosel Valley wine region in Germany. Its a river that snakes its way around the region and surrounded by rolling mountainous landscapes full of vines. The Douro has higher hills and more dramatic scenery than the Mosel. The grape vines are also more expansive and all encompassing. It is truly breathtaking.
Here are a list of all the wineries I visited during my stay in the Douro Valley.

Any mode of transport is rewarding as the road and train line hugs the mountainside on the edge of the Douro River. This offers fantastic window scenes of the colourful patchwork landscape. We took the train from Portos beautiful São Bento train station. The journey was stunning once the train left Portos urban surroundings and found the Douro River. Ride The Historical Train
The historical steam train usually runs once daily between June and October, staring in Régua, stopping briefly at Pinhão before continuing to Tua before coming back to Régua again.
The train normally departs from Régua at 15:23 and returns at around 18:32, so the entire trip lasts around 3 hours. During those three hours there is on-board entertainment with music from regional singers as well as a glass of Port and some other typical Portuguese goodies.
As for 2019, an adult ticket costs 42,50. Tickets can be purchased from train stations or online at cp.pt .
Theres a 14:20 train between Pinhão and Régua that arrives in Régua at 14:47, about half an hour before the historical train departs, so it is possible to spend the morning in Pinhão and then take the historical train in the afternoon. Alternatively, you could visit Régua instead.
One point to make about this coal-burning train is that its definitely not environmentally-friendly, and not suitable for those who are concerned about their carbon footprint.
