Where To Stay In Portland: Central Eastside

Where to Stay and Things to do in Portland Oregon

Great area for: Coffee Culture Dining and Nightlife Local Living

Places to Check Out in Central Eastside

Coava Coffee, Good Coffee, Water Avenue Coffee, Olympia Provisions, Associated, Sizzle Pie, Trifecta, Screen Door, Le Pigeon, Ox, Century Bar, Noble Rot, Doug Fir Lounge, Montage

I call the Central Eastside home, and find my love for coffee flourishes here. The heart of Portlands coffee culture is here in the Central Eastside, and the neighborhood is pretty well rounded when it comes to Portland daily life and great spots.

Coava Roasters has a beautiful industrial space where minimalist design and simplistic options are key. Grabbing a coffee and taking a walk down the Eastbank Esplanade is a very charming way to spend your morning. Water Avenue Coffee and Kure Juice Bar are along the waterfront neighborhood as well, and are local favorites.

This is also the best neighborhood for a Portland nice night out. Portlanders keep it pretty casual as a rule, but this is where youre going to find date night restaurants such as Oympic Provisions, Le Pigeon, and Ox. If a metal pizza bar is more your style, Sizzle Pie is the best place to grab an iconic Portland pizza.

Buckman / The Central Eastside: Best Location To Explore Both Sides Of The River

The Buckman neighborhood is located just across the river from downtown, making it the best centrally-located eastside neighborhood to stay in.

Pros of Staying in Buckman

If youre torn between wanting to experience both sides of town, Buckman can make for a great choice as youll be close enough to the westside with an easy walk or ride across the Burnside, Morrison, or Hawthorne bridge.

Its also home to plenty of eating and drinking and keeps growing with more and more hotel accommodations. Id recommend the central eastside as one of the best areas to stay in Portland.

Cons of Staying in Buckman

Running through the central eastside are the busy streets of MLK and Grand and crossing these streets can be a bear sometimes.

Also, though the area continues to gentrify, there are still parts that are a bit seedier and dirtier.

Buckman / Central Eastside Highlights

Im a fan of the Buckman neighborhood and there always seems to be some restaurant/shop/bar on my bucket list to visit here.

It also has some great old Portland standbys like the always fabulous Produce Row Cafe thats been there since 1974.

Outdoor gear enthusiasts will love wandering around Portlands own competition to REI for 25 years, Deek and Brians Next Adventure .

If youre a fan of live music check the upcoming shows at the Doug Fir . Skip the food in the lounge and instead go to Hey Love next door for creative cocktails and an awesome happy hour.

The Northwest District / Slabtown: Charming Convenient And Fun

Confession: No one I know calls this the Northwest District though thats what youll see on maps. Youll most likely hear Slabtown or the Alphabet District, so called because the streets are alphabetical handy tip for finding your way around!

Pros of Staying in the NW District

The NW District has a lot of the same benefits as the Pearl or downtown easy access to streetcar and MAX lines, and lots of dining and drinking.

It also has more lodging options than the Pearl, though not as many as downtown.

Cons of Staying in the NW District

While still close-in, these neighborhoods are the farthest away from downtown or the Pearl, and theres nothing really to explore north of this area .

And, though there are very cool and trendy streets like 21st and 23rd Ave, the whole area is less bustling than downtown or the Pearl. Maybe this appeals to you?

NW District / Slabtown Highlights

I really love Slabtown. I think it strikes a good balance of the gritty Portland feel that I grew up with while incorporating fashionable new restaurants and bars. And you can enjoy easy access to the expansive Forest Park, with nearby Lower Macleay Park .

Start your day with breakfast at Besaws , treat yourself to an elegant lunch at the local favorite, Papa Hayden, then hit up 23rd Ave for a day of shopping. Extra special bonus if you happen to be in town in September: reserve a sunset to watch the swifts at Chapman School.

Portland has a lot of interesting neighborhoods ready to be explored, and we hope its not too overwhelming deciding where to stay in Portland. In general, its a very safe city and is extremely tourist friendly you dont need to worry about finding yourself in a bad area if you stick to these suggestions. Where to stay in Portland really comes down to what kind of trip youre planning: whether you find yourself craving the upscale tourist flow on the Westside or the laid back vibes on the Eastside, there is a neighborhood for you.

Generally, I tend to suggest the Eastside to friends who appreciate the allure of living like a local when traveling. Hawthorne is a great first timers neighborhood if youre new to Portlands quirky, laid-back culture and want to experience the best of it. Beyond Hawthorne, the Eastside neighborhoods/areas of Central Eastside, Division, Alberta Arts and Mississippi Ave. are great bets as well.

If youd prefer to have a more big city vibe, downtown is the closest youll get in Portland. This is where youll find international brands for tax-free shopping, and there are some great restaurants in downtown as well. A bit more upscale, Nob Hill has a thriving community, and the Pearl District is full of lovely galleries.

Hiking In Forest Park Portland Oregon With Kids

As one of the largest urban parks in the United States, Forest Park offers more than 30 miles of trails with amazing forest scenery. Taking a walk through Forest Park will give you the feeling of walking in the Amazon, making it the perfect urban escape if you are looking to get away from the bustle of Portland.

Access to the park is free of charge, and you will find plenty of trail options without having to walk the same trails twice. One of them is the wild wood trail which leads to an old stone house, also called the witchs castle and sure a fun place to explore with kids.

Other than that, there are endless types of trees and grass as well as wildlife to discover and you might even spot an owl if you look carefully.

Since you could spend hours in Portlands Urban Forest Park make sure to bring enough water and snacks with you. In general, although hilly, the trails are almost perfectly maintained. Though a pair of trail running or hiking shoes with a good grip will help you get through some muddy and rocky sections.

For your orientation you will find maps at most trail heads and at intersections of trails. Its up to you where you want to head to, but there are lots of options with easy, family friendly trails, as well as more challenging trails for those who are looking to get a good workout in.
