Where To Stay In Puerto Viejo Costa Rica

Rent A Bike And Explore

Welcome to PUERTO VIEJO! Costa Rica’s Hidden Gem

Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica is a small town, and as such, it can easily be explored on a bicycle! In fact, with a bike, you can easily reach most of the places mentioned in this blog!

The best part? Renting a bike in Puerto Viejo costs as little as $7 USD for 24 hours! There are tons of different shops in downtown Puerto Viejo that offer bike rentals.

We actually rented bikes for the duration of our stay in Puerto Viejo. It made getting around really easy, plus it was fun!

Playa Conchal Where To Stay In Costa Rica For Scuba Diving

Be sure to pack thick-soled beach sandals and a bucket if Playa Conchal is where you choose to stay in Cista Rica. In a country filled with amazing beaches, Conchal takes the cake because it is blessed with a long stretch of sand completely covered with seashells.

Marine biologists often come here to study the gentle ocean current that has been depositing seashells here over millions of years, and one explanation is that the waters that surround this small bay are teeming with life.

If you are into scuba diving, Conchal is where you should stay in Costa Rica.

Conchal is very remote, but it is strategically located in the Gulf of Nicoya and not far from the Liberia airport.

The only lodging options in Conchal are a couple of luxury all-inclusive beach resorts, and they are worth every penny because they provide the kind of pampering we should all be able to experience at least once in our lives.

Where To Eat In Puerto Viejo Town

In Puerto Viejo town, youll want to check out Cafe Rico for an early breakfast, the only place in town open at 5:30am. You can get a pasta bowl sized portion of fruit and granola and a good coffee while being watched by a portrait of the Queen. The cafe also has a great book exchange which gives it the appearance of a dusty castle constructed of books.

Can you believe that this is the small bowl of granola!?

My personal favourite of the cafes in Puerto Viejo was Como en mi Casa Art Cafe. This vegetarian/vegan gem is sitting bang on top of the local butchers and has a heap of gluten-free options too. The chickpea wraps are a great lunch snack and you have to try out the raw vegan tropical fruit cake. Oh and without a doubt: best coffee in town.

The art cafe has the best black coffee in town, let me tell you.

DreadNut Coffee was another great cafe that we stopped by a few times. Some crazy cool coffee options like black vanilla americanos and iced baileys lattes, homemade bagels at a cheaper price than everywhere else and an outside balcony with a sea view, what more could you want?

The Charm Of Puerto Viejo

Simply known as Puerto Viejo by the locals and not to be confused with Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui in Heredia, this bustling town lies 34 miles south east of Puerto Limon, and 10.2 miles south of Cahuita.

Formerly a quiet little fishing village, Puerto Viejo has a charm that is all its own. Becoming increasingly popular, especially with the young hip crowd, this town is among the top rated surfing destinations of the world. With its relaxed atmosphere and its own unique blend of Latino, Afro-Caribbean and Bribri indigenous cultures, Puerto Viejo is a lively place to have a fun relaxing vacation.

This town has a wide variety of bars, discos and restaurants as well as reasonably priced accommodations and hotels scattered all over the place. Additionally, there are also plenty of good shopping opportunities available out here as well.

Puerto Jimenez Hikes Fishing Whale And Dolphin Watching And Archeological Spots

Located on the southern Pacific coast, Puerto Jimenez is an expat enclave and a somewhat hidden tourism destination with a lot to offer.

Puerto Jimenez is a small coastal town adjacent to Corcovado National Park, a massive rainforest that illustrates why Costa Rica is such an amazing destination for ecotourism.

Whereas the climate close to the beach is dry and crisp, Corcovado is extremely humid, and you should keep this in mind when booking accommodations.

In many tourism guidebooks, Puerto Jimenez is listed as an attraction that visitors should save for last the basis of this recommendation is that it takes about seven hours to get here from San Jose, but you can also fly into the small regional airport on a short flight that takes less than an hour from just about anywhere in the country.

Renting a car in Puerto Jimenez used to be pretty adventurous, but now it is highly recommended because the roads around town are freshly paved.

If you make Puerto Jimenez your sole place to stay in Costa Rica, you will not be disappointed.

The hikes around Corcovado are amazing, but keep in mind that this is the rainforest, which means that you should not venture down unmarked paths unless you do so with local guides, who in turn do not go into the jungle without GPS, maps, trackers, communications devices, and emergency gear.

You can expect to pay a bit more for beachfront locations and rooms with panoramic views of Corcovado.

Visiting Cahuita National Park

Hiking through the national park, theres a chance youll see sloths hanging out in the trees. As if that wasnt cool enough, you can also hike to a shipwreck, which youll find at the mouth of the River Perezoso. The best way to explore the park and see all of its best bits is on a guided hike, which costs around $60, lasts for 4.5 hours, includes a trip to a waterfall. You can book this in advance here.

Most people visit Cahuita to see its marine life, though. Snorkelling and scuba diving are the best ways to explore what makes the national park so special. The best months for doing this are February-April, but you can go snorkelling or scuba diving year-round.

Theres only one beach thats safe to swim at, so pay attention to the signs and dont swim if nobody else is in the water.

Entrance to the park is currently donation-based, and you can get there by car in around 20 minutes. By bus, hop on the Puerto Viejo to Puerto Limon bus and get off at the Cahuita stop.
