The famous bronze doors, made by Barisano from Trani using the relief-techinque, were given to the Cathedral in 1179 by Sergio Muscettola, an important member of the Ravello patriciate. The ambo of Epistle is marked by bizantine decorations and is decorated by mosaics representing the Giona’s story, a symbol of the Death and Resurrection of Christ. The pulpit made by Nicola di Bartolomeo from Foggia in 1272 is a present of Nicola Rufolo. It rests on six twist coloums adorned with mosaics the backs of six lions are the base of these coloums. It’s richly adorned with mosaic slabs representing geometrical, animal and plant decorations. Th marble chapel of St. Pantaleone, patron of Ravello, was built during the 17th century to preserve the precious relic of the patrons’s blood. This is the most indulgent hotel on the Amalfi Coast, a multi-storey tumble of rooms built into a cliff by Carlo Cinque in the late 1960s. The rooms are huge , the terraced gardens spectacular, and there’s a Michelin-starred restaurant that makes the most of local seafood and produce from the hotel’s kitchen garden, with dishes such as prawn carpaccio with herbs. A lift whisks you down through the rock face to the private beach, a tennis court and the relaxed, lunch-only Carlino restaurant. Back up top, the famous terrace is one of the places for a sunset aperitivo.

Any room you book here will come with a view: furnished balconies look out over some gorgeous landscapes — not the least of which are the property’s own gardens — and the blue waters of the sea. The large units are quiet, thanks to their positioning away from the road, and Superior Rooms on the upper floors even more so. The rooms themselves, however, are looking a little tired, with white walls, wood or tile floors, and unremarkable medium-brown wood furniture interrupted by either shocking jolts of red, or more traditional blue-and-gold mismatched linens. Some rooms have charming patterned tiling on the floors.

Rooms are air-conditioned and come with satellite TVs, desks, and minibars. Bathrooms are fairly spacious across all room types, equipped with shower/tub combos and old hose-style hairdryers. Superior Rooms include showers or whirlpool tubs. On the downside, some guests have complained about easily rectifiable maintenance issues that hint at the need for a property-wide renewal: loose wall sockets, dysfunctional whirlpool tubs, and showers that aren’t attached to the wall.

Driving Along The Amalfi Coast

Many tourists who drove the Almafi coastal road advise against driving it at all. I want to make things clear, the road itself is not dangerous. Yes, it is narrow and winding but you will not fall off the cliff.

What makes it dangerous is heavy traffic and tour buses not being able to make the sharp turns. In summer months, you can expect bumper to bumper and accidents.

But do not worry, there is a way to do avoid the traffic and still enjoy the ride. Simply get up early, preferably at sunrise, and finish your tour before 8 AM when touring buses hit the road. We took our drive soon after sunrise and had the road to ourselves. The sky was spectacular at that hour!

You need to get up early in the morning to enjoy the ride along the Amalfi Coast.

Lets face it, Ravello boasts surroundings that are so captivating its likely that youll want to spend a good deal of time wallowing in them upon your arrival. The town square, the Piazza Vescovado, is the perfect spot for doing just that.

Housing Ravello Cathedral, the entrance to Villa Rufolo and a clattering of cafes and bars along its edges, the town square is the perfect spot to grab a coffee/gelato/wine and soak it all in. Its also a strategic location for people watching and if youre lucky youll be witness to a wedding party or two cross your fingers that its an Italian one, as guests are always uber-stylish.

Outside of that, follow where your feet take you and see how many different vantage points you can discover of the coastline from the winding streets of Ravello. I promise, its a view that you could never grow tired of.

The Best Places To Stay In Ravello For A View

The chief joy of Villa Maria – and why guests return again and again – is the hidden dining terrace which has, possibly, one of the finest restaurant views of the coast with unfolding headlands of cliffs dropping down to the sea. Much of the food comes from the hotels garden while rooms are beautifully traditional and relaxing.

I Have Been To Ravello On A Number Of Occasions About 10

I have been to Ravello on a number of occasions about 10. All of those visits were excellent. It has now been spoilt by too many weddings. Prices have gone up considerably.The views are excellent. Too many unruly visitors. Eating out was good in most places but you need to book beforehand. You need to be fit because anywhere you might want to go includes hills. The people were friendly and helpful and I admire their patience with the many visitors who complain about everything. Sorry to see such a beautify village spoilt unfortunately I will not be returning

The Church of San Francesco is an unassuming building that you will likely encounter if you walk via Via San Francesco from Ravello town centre to Villa Cimbrone.

Local legend has it that it was built by Saint Francis himself, who travelled via Ravello in 1222 when heading to Amalfi. Annexed to a Franciscan convent, access to the church is via a covered atrium, that you access directly from Via San Francesco.

Getting Around The Amalfi Coast Without A Car

There are three main ways that I would recommend getting around the Amalfi Coast:

1. By SITA Bus

The Ravello SITA bus stop is located just outside of the pedestrian tunnel off Ravellos main square.

Most routes will require you to transit through Amalfi, which is no big deal, but it is worth noting that you will need either two single-ride bus tickets , or instead, if you plan on hopping on the next bus immediately to your end destination, you can purchase an orario ticket, which is cheaper than two singles.

It may work out better for you to purchase the 24-hour bus ticket that is called the costierasita,. Validated when you step on your first bus, this allows you unlimited travel for 24 hours from this point and is the most cost effective option.

Note: tickets for SITA buses can be bought from local shops such as newsagents, grocers etc just ask a local in the town where the nearest spot is. Also, while you can check bus timetables at this website, dont get too hung up on schedules due to the nature of the traffic on the Amalfi Coast , the bus will arrive when it arrives!

2. By ferry

The ferries are a wonderful way of getting around the Amalfi Coast. Journey times are drastically cut as you dont have to battle traffic and you also receive spectacular views of the Amalfi coastline to boot. You can check ferry schedules on this website.
