Scenic Drive In Red Rock Canyon
But first, we were rewarded with a remarkable and stunning scenic drive around the park. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers a 13 mile one way scenic drive on undulating hills on an asphalt road. It starts as soon as you enter the park and takes you all the way around and back to that entrance. The road was very wide, with lots of room. We were able to drive as slow as we wanted and not disturb other drivers. Luckily, we saw lots places to stop and park so we could explore a little on foot and take photos. We loved the drive and the views that we saw.

One of the things that I always notice when Im in Las Vegas is how flat everything is. In fact, I can look out of any hotel window on the strip and see for miles and miles because it is so flat. However, Red Rock Canyon is very different.
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area lies in Nevadas Mojave Desert. Accordingly, there are vast plains of beige sand, green cacti and other desert vegetation everywhere you look. And then, out of nowhere, towering red sandstone peaks next to enormous brown limestone summits jut out of the land. It is so abrupt that you wonder whether there has been a mistake whether you have stumbled upon your childs geography project and they have someone mangled the proportions of the landscape.
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is stunningly beautiful. Except for the Visitors Centre, it is completely uninhabited and undeveloped Everywhere you drive or walk, you are surrounded by nature and beautiful jaw dropping views of red or brown rugged mountains.

A growing population means the Las Vegas Valley used 1.2 billion US gallons more water in 2014 than in 2011. Although water conservation efforts implemented in the wake of a 2002 drought have had some success, local remains 30 percent more than in Los Angeles, and over three times that of San Francisco metropolitan area residents. The is building a $1.4 billion tunnel and pumping station to bring water from , has purchased water rights throughout Nevada, and has planned a controversial $3.2 billion across half the state. By law, the Las Vegas Water Service District “may deny any request for a water commitment or request for a water connection if the District has an inadequate supply of water.” However, limiting growth on the basis of an inadequate water supply has been unpopular with the casino and building industries.

Visiting Red Rock Canyon
Red Rocks Nevada itself is a pretty amazing place that you can visit in a day, but also spend a lifetime exploring. Even though I spent a few weeks there, I felt like I only scratched the surface of what it has to offer, but thats what made me come back again a few years later.
If Im going to be totally honest, Im not a huge fan of Las Vegas, but there are certainly some hidden gems to be discovered. If youre going for the Vegas experience, Im a much bigger fan of the old school, downtown Las Vegas rather than the Strip. Be sure to visit Red Rock Canyon during your trip, and spend a bit of time at Lake Mead as well.
One amazing place to eat in Vegas is Phat Phranks Mexican Restaurant. That guy is awesome and makes some of the most delicious Mexican food Ive ever had.
So there you have it, a brief guide of the best things to do in Red Rock Canyon. Thats but a taste of everything it has to offer, but it should get you off to a good start. Enjoy it!
Traveling to Las Vegas soon? Book your lodging on Booking.com now to save, or if you plan to stay off the strip, I highly recommend looking for a place on Airbnb. And dont forget to purchase travel insurance that will help protect you against illness, injury, and theft. I use and recommend World Nomads for its combination of coverage and affordability.
