Old San Juan: Rich In Color And History

What to Do in Rincon, Puerto Rico [Art, Beaches, Beer and More]

Greater San Juan is beautiful, safe, vibrant, and in our opinion, one of the best places to visit in Puerto Rico. The neighborhood of Old San Juan, on the northmost tip of the city, is full of history: ancient forts, monuments, museums, and colorful historic houses.

Take advantage of local advice. Locals tell us that Old San Juan can be hit or miss when it comes to restaurant optionslots of stuff in this area is geared at tourists. Still, they say its easy to find diamonds in the rough. One of our locals raved about Punto de Vista, where you can get great Puerto Rican food and enjoy a stellar sunset from the restaurants rooftop.

Right in the heart of San Juans nightlife district, this stylish hostel is a great place to meet other travelers to explore the city with. Their rooftop bar serves cheap beer and cocktails for you to enjoy alongside the panoramic views. Santurce, where the hostel is located, is also a major creative hub in the Puerto Rican capital.

Rincn: Art Fills The City Square On Thursdays

The Rincón Art Walk begins at 7 PM after artists have set up booths downtown to display their work. Fundación Nacional para la Cultura Popular claims that the event was never meant for tourists. Instead, the goal is to increase domestic tourism and celebrate Puerto Rican culture. For this reason, it isnt a typical souvenir alley. A large portion of its artists are painters. Many pieces are sized for local homes, but some are small enough to take back on a plane.

Gozalandia Falls San Sebastian

The 60-foot Gozalandia Waterfall in San Sebastian is a must-visit and natural beauty in Puerto Rico.

You can swim in the pond, jump from the waterfall, and spend a few hours here taking it all in. Plus youll be able to see plenty of fish through the clear water.

It wasnt too busy when I visited on a Wednesday afternoon, however, I assume it gets pretty busy on the weekends.

How to Get to Gozalandia Falls: The waterfall is located east of Rincon, in San Sebastian, and would take about 50 minutes to get to. There is parking right next to the falls for a $10 fee.

Once parked, you have to take a 5-minute walk to the waterfall, going down a few steps.

Things to Note:

  • Parking: $10 to park in the large parking lot, a 5-minute walk to the Waterfall.
  • Food: There is a small eatery/bar next to the parking lot with outdoor seating.
  • Bathroom: Yes, near the parking lot
  • Shoes: If you plan on going swimming in the water, water shoes are a must! The rocks to get in have slippery moss, and its easy to fall without any grip.

Where to Stay in Rincón

Rincon is more of a region than a town. There is a town center, but is only 4 square blocks. It is not necessary to stay near the downtown area.

Youll be close to a beach regardless of if you stay on the north or the center of Rincon as beaches line the entire town.

In fact, Rincon is quite small, you can drive from one end to the other side within 15 minutes.

And if you visit for more than 2 days, youll have the roads memorized as there are only a few of them!

To Note: Rincon is built on a hill, so some of the accommodations, especially ones with epic views, require you to drive up very steep roads. Be sure to keep that in mind when booking if you are uncomfortable driving in tight spaces.

There arent a lot of hotels in Rincon. I have listed them below, but you might be better of renting an Airbnb. Here are my accommodation recommendations:

Rincon Where To Stay In Puerto Rico For Surfing

Rincon is a municipality, located in a valley on the west coast of the main island. It is best known for its wonderful collection of 53 the Caribbean and surfing-style beaches.

Rincon Town Beach Plaza, Sandy Beach, Marias, Domes, Pools Beach, and Tres Palmas are just some of the popular options here.

Domes beach was even the site of the 1968 World Surfing Championships. Since then, top level surfers have regularly visited, either participating in competitions or honing their skills.

Surfing isnt the only water sport popular in Rincon though. As the tourist industry blossomed with the surf competitions, companies set up shops offering all types of activities. Now, everything from snorkeling and scuba diving to jet ski and boat rides is available.

Meanwhile, an incredible collection of bars and restaurants lines the seafront, catering to all manner of tastes and budgets. This gives you the chance to unwind with a drink or meal of an evening while watching some of the most beautiful sunsets you will find anywhere in Puerto Rico.

While the majority of the attractions here revolve around the water, there are some options on land too, to help you break your trip up a little. One such example is the Punta Higuero Lighthouse.

Originally built in 1892, the historic lighthouse was rebuilt 30 years later. Having now stood in its current condition for 100 years, it is a fabulous place to take in some of the histories of the area with one of its most impressive feats of engineering.

Speaking of great island destinations…if you’re looking for beachy things to do in Puerto Rico Culebra is a great place to stay. Just off the coast of Puerto Rico proper, Culebra is home to Playa Flamenco , which is known for its warm turquoise waters and white sands.
