Where To Stay In Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber

The Fascinating History Of Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber

Rothenburg ob der Tauber (Germany) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Rothenburg ob der Tauber was once one of the largest cities in Germany in the 15th century.

After several plagues and the 30 Years War, the town experienced a major population decline and poverty for decades. Subsequently, the towns growth essentially stopped.

Without the resources or population to modernize the city, it has essentially remained perfectly preserved since in the 17th century!

Beacause of this, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany is literally a place where time stands still. I dont think theres anywhere else on earth left like this.

However, the town was almost completely destroyed in WWII. The Americans had started to air bomb the village because of Nazi soldiers stationed there. Fortunately, they missed many targets because of cloud and fog.

Later that week the Americans were set to finish the job. The story goes that upon receiving this internal military intelligence, an American general made a deal.

Although having never been himself, he had fond memories of the town from paintings his mother had hung in his childhood home. Consequently, he proposed a deal.

In exchange for sparing the town from bomb destruction, the Nazi soldiers agreed to leave the town leaving it no longer Nazi-occupied. Following WWII, the area underwent a revitalization in an effort to attract tourists post war.

Parking Tips In Rothenburg

With that in mind, parking is a nightmare. Its best to park your vehicle for the entirety of your stay outside of the walls. Then plan to walk as your main method of getting around. Its not a very big place, but comfy shoes are a must.

Youll find that many accommodations will have you park outside of the walled portion of the city.

There are more parking lots that are less expensive. Be sure to ask your hotel where you should park when you book your stay.

Take note of which gate you enter through, as some of them look the same!

While not a big place, it can be a little confusing if you dont pay attention. Snap a quick photo of the closest street sign and youre all set!

How To Get To Rothenburg

Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany

It is easy to travel here from Munich and Frankfurt. There are quite a few group tours available as well. But if youre planning to visit on your own, as I suggest you do it, here is how to get to Rothenburg:

As per the tourist info Rothenburg website: Take Highway A7 Würzburg Ulm to Rothenburg. Take exit 108 Rothenburg / Tauber and follow the signposts for the town centre. Those who are driving will be happy to know that its allowed to drive anywhere inside the old town of Rothenburg, though parking isnt too easy to come by in the old town. Remember, the streets are quite narrow, and mostly bustling with day-trippers.

You can also read my one week Romantic Road Road Trip Guide, and see how I travelled from Frankfurt to Rothenburg.

On this trip, however, I visited Rothenburg on a train . The station is located very close to the Old Town, so you can get there by foot in less than 10 minutes. The train journey takes 3-4 hours depending on which train you catch .

We joined the one hour tour, which operates each evening from mid-March to early January, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Dressed in a black cape and broad-brimmed hat and carrying a lantern, the Nightwatchman leads tourists around town, pointing out places of interest and explaining their place in Rothenburgs history.

With his entertaining style, the Nightwatchman had everyone in fits of laughter as he regaled us with stories from the past and this is definitely one of the most fun things to do in Rothenburg,Germany.

Experience Christmas All Year Long

Forget the North Pole. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the Christmas capital of the world! In fact, you can experience the holidays year round in Rothenburg. It is even home to a great little Christmas museum. Tucked inside a beautiful Christmas store just off the main market square, the museum walks you through the history of Christmas and how the holidays traditions and decorations have evolved through the years.

Young kids will love the colors, lights, and stimulating sights of the museum, while older children and teens may actually learn something about the Christian holiday and its pre-Christian origins.

It is inexpensive to visit, costing about $4.50US per person or approximately $9.00US for a family of four. The museum is open year round as is the Christmas store where you can buy souvenirs, ornaments, and unique Christmas decor to take home.

It is easy to find the Christmas store and museum, as there is typically a van parked in front that is wrapped like a present.

How Long To Stay In Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber

One thing Ive learned on my European Christmas Market adventures is that I usually want two or three nights in a place. Tom and I can get an overview of a city in two nights and three days. One night is great for a taste of the tourist attractions, but it always leaves me wanting more. I think there are enough things to do in Rothenburg ob der Tauber for a two night / three day trip. Plenty of people do it as a day trip, but I think it is magical to stay there at least a day.

Enjoy An Early Dinner

Once youre done exploring the old town, take a break andhave an early dinner. Youll need to be finished up in time to meet the walkingtour at 8pm, so now is not the time for a 5 course dinner.

If youre looking for an alternative to German food, Idrecommend Eis Café Pizzeria Roma. Serving up a great variety of pizza andpasta, its a short walk from the market square. We ate dinner here one nightbefore we went on the walking tour, and the service was fast and efficient.

Eat An Original Schneeballen

Rothenburg ob der tauber

Ill admit it. Its touristy af and I bought into the schneeballen goodness. But, dear reader, I also took one for the team and tried different schneeballen so that I could give you accurate assessment of this goodness. Heres what I learned from these delicious dough balls:

  • The original schneeballen is the best schneeballen. While you may be tempted by cinnamon schneeballen or chocolate covered schneeballen, some things are better left alone. The original schneeballen will never steer you wrong. (I found the chocolate schneeballen too rich. The cinnamon schneeballen tasted great on the surface and plain dough on the inside.
  • The best place to get an original schneeballen is at Diller Schneebalentraume Cafe. I thought their dough tasted more fresh and the flavors could be tasted all the way through, not just on the surface pieces.

How Long Should I Spend In Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber

If youre traveling on the Romantic Road, you might be wondering how much time to allot in each town. Rothenburg ob der Tauber was one of my favorite stops, and I think it needs at least 4-6 hours to do it justice. This will allow you to walk around, have a meal, shop and maybe see a museum.

If your schedule allows, I highly recommend staying the night as the town has a much different vibe once the massive amount of day trippers have vacated. We spent 1 night in town and felt as if we had the whole thing to ourselves.
