Eight Reasons To Stay In Salerno Over Sorrento On Any Trip To The Amalfi Coast:

1. Unlike Sorrento or elsewhere in the Amalfi coast, Salerno is on the main train line from Rome.

That means you dont need to change trains in Naples, or anywhere at all. And its faster. The fastest train from Rome to Salerno is just 2 hours slowest, 3 hours 30 minutes. To get to Sorrento, meanwhile, you have to take a train from Rome to Naples , then take the Circumvesuviana from Naples to Sorrento in around 1 hour.

In other words? With the amount of time it takes to switch trains, you can get to Salerno faster, for roughly the same amount of money as Sorrento. Or, if youre comparing the cheapest trains, you can pay around 10 more and get to Salerno about 30-45 minutes sooner.

Other towns on the Amalfi coast, meanwhile, arent even connected to the Circumvesuviana, so if you were staying in, say, Amalfi Town, youd have to take the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento, then switch to a bus.

2. Salerno is super-convenient for getting to other Amalfi coast towns.

In fact, that Amalfi coast bus ride that starts at Sorrento? It ends in Salerno. That doesnt just mean that its every bit as easy to get to Positano and Amalfi Town from Salerno as from Sorrento. It also means that, in a lot of ways, its better. Since everyone stays in Sorrento, not Salerno , youre going in the opposite direction as everyone else and the buses are less crowded.

Best Months To Visit Southern Italy

As a coast city, is best to visit Salerno in summer, especially if youre looking forward to spend your vacations in the beach. Going in winter might be a bit boring since theres not much to do when its cold. So, its best to avoid those.

Spring is interesting because its a very green city, so it looks beautiful. However, the best months to go to Salerno are June, July, and August. September is already uninviting to enjoy the beach, so you should go, tops, in mid-August.

Salerno does not have a huge variety of bars if you are looking for a night out, but the Black Roses Irish Pub is one of the most well-known and has a great atmosphere and selection of ales, wines and spirits for your enjoyment.

Located on the SR88 route in close proximity to the Forte La Carnale, this pub has an inviting décor, friendly staff and also a selection of meals if you want a place to dine.

The selection of drinks is first class and the prices are reasonable too The Black Roses Bar really is the perfect location for a round of evening drinks in Salerno.

Where To Stay In Salerno

Are you convinced about visiting Salerno, Italy now? It is a perfect base for exploring the coast but there is obviously a lot to do in this small city itself.

If you are going to stay in Salerno, the first thing to do is decide if you want to stay in the old town , or in the newer part of town which is very close to transportation. Most of the larger hotels will be near the station and port, whereas apartments and B& B can be found in the characteristic historic center.

Here are my favorite places to stay in Salerno:

  • Hotel Plaza: Convenient if you are arriving in Salerno by train, or if you want to be close to the port to take the ferry, Hotel Plaza is set on the edge of the city near these transport hubs. The three-star hotel is comfortable if sometimes a little basic, but it has friendly staff, fast Wi-Fi and that oh-so-convenient location.
  • Hotel Montestella: For a more modernly updated room, Hotel Montestella is a four-star hotel on Salernos main street. The hotel has been completely redone in cool gray tone with pops of color and has larger than average rooms. It is set in between the train station and ferry port and the old town, meaning you can easily get to all parts of the city.
  • Casa Castagna: For a more personal touch, Casa Castagna is a B& B with sweet hostesses and a lovely breakfast. Every room has its own bathroom, but there is a communal kitchen and dining area where guests gather for homecooked goodies served on colorful Amalfi-inspired plates.

Pros And Cons Of Staying In Positano

    • Pros: its stunningly gorgeous. It has lots of little shops and alleyways. It has amazing restaurants and a couple beautiful beaches. The boat stops there. Its easy to visit the rest of the coast by bus. The stunning Path of the Gods hiking trail is easily accessible. There are many excellent hotels and restaurants. Its easy to get to Sorrento and Amalfi and Ravello. And finally, if you dont mind walking uphill and downhill, its small enough to get around completely on foot.
    • Cons: unless youre walking on the beach, youre probably walking either uphill or downhill. Its extremely touristy. The hotels are expensive, not great value for money, and they sell out early. The beaches are busy and somewhat small. Its worth noting that parking is almost impossible.

Praiano Is The Perfect Spot If You Want More Peace And Quiet

An absolutely beautiful town, Praiano is a little out of the way and often overlooked by tourists, particularly those coming by cruise ship, so is less crowded than other towns. When looking for where to stay on the Amalfi Coast, Praiano can often be forgotten, but its stunning views, quieter atmosphere, and cheaper prices make it a fantastic option! Itâs just 15-20 minutes from Positano , but it much less expensive in accommodations.

There are two lovely beaches you can access from Praiano, but there are a lot of stairs to reach the beach, so be prepared to do some walking if you decide Praino is where to stay on the Amalfi Coast. Particularly if your trip is on a tighter budget, youll appreciate Praianos prices. Praiano does tend to be more difficult to access, since its off the track for most tourists. This yields a quieter atmosphere but does make traveling a bit more of a challenge. If you stay in Priano, travel to the surrounding towns on the Amalfi Coast is a bit problematic via public transport. Also, plan on carrying your luggage a lot of time, and shifting it between multiple means of transportation. If youre good with all of that, Praiano is the town for you!

Upsides: Full of amazing historic monuments. Cheaper than Positano. Amazing views! Beach access.

Downsides: Lots of stairs to reach the beach. Public transport can be a challenge. Buses fill quickly during high tourist seasons, so it can be time-consuming to get to other towns.

    Villa Comunale Di Salerno

Italy 4K. Salerno – Amalfi boat trip.

    Source: wikipedia

Located in the heart of the historic old town in close proximity to the harbour is the Villa Comunale di Salerno This stunning landscaped garden is a fantastic place to relax and also has some interesting sculptures and monuments.

A plethora of exotic trees provide shade, and a small pond plays host to a variety of fish.

Furthermore, several beautiful statues stand guard including Giovanni Nicotera, Carlo Piscane and Clemente Mauro all of which were important Italian figures through history.

Events are sometimes held here too, but in general, the park is one of the best places in Salerno to sit back and find some rejuvenation.

What Is The Best Town To Stay On The Amalfi Coast

Sorrento is the best town on the Amalfi Coast. First-time visitors as well as returning holidaymakers often choose to stay in here, as you can get to see the charm of the coast while also being able to have a couple of drinks, tan at the beach and a bustling atmosphere through day and night. Sorrento is also where you can find ferries to take you to the Island of Capri.

    Moving Around The City

Within the city visitors can walk around to explore the attractions, most of which are located close to the center of the city. There are many beautiful pedestrian streets and large piazzas in the city that can be easily explored on foot. The public buses in the city can also be used for sightseeing in the city and beyond. Those who have a car can easily drive around since traffic is not a problem and parking is available in most areas.

Choosing Between Amalfi Positano And Sorrento

Amalfi and Positano are located on the Amalfi Coast. The beauty and uniqueness of the 13 towns situated on this Italian coastline are just two reasons why it was declared one of UNESCOs World Heritage Sites. Sorrento, on the other hand, is not situated on the Amalfi Coast. This vibrant old town is found on the Sorrentine Peninsula between the Bay of Naples and the Amalfi coastline. It is the easiest accessible out of the three towns and makes for the perfect base from where you can visit all the quaint little villages, including Amalfi and Positano.
