With its beautiful baroque buildings, manicured gardens, and the fascinating stories of a slew of remarkable characters, Salzburg has rightfully earned its spot as one of Central Europes most visited cities.

Bonus: If Youre A Fan Of The Sound Of Music
You might know already, but if you dont, Ill tell you: Salzburg is totally THE Sound of Music city!
In case you want to visit Salzburg because youre a fan of the classic movie from 1965, I think thats a wonderful decision and I got super good news! In case you didnt see it yet, you must watch it before your visit, as its an iconic American musical drama about the real story of the singers in the Von Trapp family, which lived in Salzburg. The movie was filmed in and around the city and I actually found some pretty amazing places where you can stay that are strongly tied to the films story:
- Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron If youre looking for a Salzburg castle hotel that ALSO has something to do with the movie, this ones for you. This famous hotel was used as a set for many scenes from this classical film, so its basically the perfect decision! Plus, youll have some great views over the lake or mountain and the rooms are simply amazing.
- Villa Trapp Okay, are you ready for this? This villa was actually the real residence of the real Von Trapp family! Since 2008 you can book rooms here and experience what it truly means to stay in style! The entire property is super charming and very well preserved and they offer excellent service! But beware, as its actually located in Aigen, a suburb of the city!
Where To Stay In Salzburg Old Town
Salzburg Old Town, or Altstadt as it is locally known, is one of the most popular areas for visitors to stay during their trip to Salzburg. Its not hard to see why, with so much to see and do in the area, and some beautiful, historical architecture making it an aesthetic delight to wander around.
There are plenty of options for accommodation, although most cater to higher budgets. Some more affordable options are available, but they tend to be more basic. The Boutiquehotel am Dom is a superb option, offering stylish rooms at the heart of the Old Town, right behind Residenzplatz.

Staying In Salzburg Center

Obviously, in an ideal world, residing in the center for your trip is ideal. And this is possible if your budget allows it. But, you should plan on spending anywhere from $80 to $250 a night. Unless, of course, you are okay with staying in a shared hostel room, then you can find a bed for around $25. These are summer, weekend prices. During the week, it may be a little cheaper, but not much. Off-season, its almost half the price on some of these hotels and hostels.
The Cheap Traveler a& o Salzburg Hauptbahnhof is a hostel located in the Center with shared dorm rooms costing around $25, and you can get a private room for about $75 if booked early enough. They claim on their site that it is cheaper to book directly from them, but Hotels.com is a little less if you are looking to save a few bucks.
The Moderate Traveler Lasserhof Salzburg is a step up from a hostel. Their website is a little hard to navigate, but they claim if you find a lower price elsewhere, they will match it. As much as I like a commission if you click on these links and order, if a hotel is willing to do this to stay afloat, I will promote them. Especially after the hit, the industry got with covid. But, looking across the platforms, Hotel.com was still the cheapest.
AirBnBs in the center is going to cost around $100 a night.

Austria Is An Ideal Country
Austria is an ideal country for a classical music lover. Even Salzburg is the Mozart and the Sound of Music city, it also offers stunning scenic views. We got the best city and scenic view from the top of the Hohensalburg castle. There are buses/trams but you will be enjoyed exploring the city by walk.It is an ideal romantic city to visit if you like music, nature, castle and such but not for a shopper and a nightlife . After visiting the old town , the castle, and Mozart’s residence , Mirabell Palace, I would highly recommend you to still stay in Salzburg and take a one-day-trip train to Hallstatt and/or Obertraun . It is easy to go and it is much cheaper to stay in Salzburg . Also, local authentic Salzburg restaurants are unique and tasty. And I believe you could not probably get some menus and tastes in Vienna. We stayed near Salzburg train station. We think it is the best location to stay because it is an only 20-min walk to the old town, easy to get to other nearby cities, proximity to a variety of cafes/restaurants, close to late-night supermarket and such. There are direct buses/trams from/to the airport.
Where To Stay In Salzburg What You Need To Know
Salzburg is the capital of the Bundesland of Salzburg, in central-northern Austria.
It is located on both banks of the Salzach River, near the Northern Alps and the German border.
The name Salzburg means salt fortress. For thousands of years, salt has been extracted from the area around the city. This white gold made Salzburg a powerful commercial city.
Salzburg is famous for its baroque architecture, which can be seen throughout the Old Town, which survived the Second World War and remains practically intact, so most of these ancient baroque buildings are in their original state. In 1996, the city of Salzburg became a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
When choosing the best areas to stay in Salzburg, the Historic Centre or Altstadt is the best alternative, as it is where most of its attractions and baroque architecture are located .

Neustadt For Shopping + Nightlife
If you are travelling to Salzburg with the intention of enjoying the nightlife, then you might want to stay in New Town. Located just across the river from the main part of the Old Town on the north side of the river, New Town is the area known for nightlife, food, bars and more.
Now, admittedly its kind of loosely defined where the Old Town ends and New Town begins. However, for our purposes, the hotels and restaurants that are just south of the central train station and north of the river are New Town and its considered a really good location.
The area itself is also quite historic and features lovely architecture which makes staying here a great option. Depending on the exact street you stay on, it can also be quieter than the Old Town !
This whole area is unique in the sense that youre close to places to eat, bars for drinks and youre still only a short walk to the Old Town and to the train station.
Youll also find a handful of attractions nearby like: Linzer Gasse, , Mirabell Palace + Gardens, Mozart-Wohnhaus, and the hike to the Kapuzinerkloster, to name a few.
Featured Accommodations in Neustadt Area
Below are a handful of the accommodation options in New Town. Its mainly hotels that are here. In fact, youll find many of the top hotels in Salzburg located here.
However, the area has a nice mix of them. As we mentioned, this area is centrally-located without being too touristy!

Nonntal is kind of like a hidden gem but for good reason. The area doesnt get busy yet it only takes a 10/15 minute walk to the river and the Old Town. The main road is also loaded with bus stops so you can always take transit to the centre if needed.
Again, since this is a more green and quiet area, there arent too many attractions around. That said, you are so close to the Castle , Stift Nonnberg, a few parks, the river, and more.

For a fairy-tale romantic getaway, the Hotel Schloss Monchstein will provide the ambience and setting. Housed in a castle-like mansion near the Museum of Modern Art, rooms are furnished with antiques, and the private event rooms are available for special moments, including civil marriage ceremonies in the Gothic Chamber.

In the center of the pedestrian zone and just steps from Old Market Square, Hotel Am Dom is less than five minutes on foot to Mozart Bridge, which crosses the river to the rest of the city’s main attractions.
Rooms look down onto the narrow old town streets, or across the neighboring Residenzplatz, and feature ceilings of traditional exposed wooden beams, original artwork, and a luxurious soaking tub.
Spend a night in Salzburgâs oldest inn when staying at the arthotel Blaue Gans, which dates back more than 650 years. In the historic city center, it is located at the end of the Getreidegasse, Salzburgâs most famous shopping street.
