Where To Stay In Santa Fe With Kids

Mini Suite At Inn Of The Governors Great For Families

17 Things to do in Santa Fe, New Mexico: A Travel Guide

We stayed in a Mini Suite which offered two queen beds plus a spacious living area with a balcony and a fireplace. The couch in our living room pulled out into a bed, so this room can accommodate a larger family. We stayed in the middle of summer but we did use the fireplace one night, since it was a novelty for my kids. Also because my husband told them Maybe well have a fire as soon as we walked in and saw the fireplace. We loved the Southwestern feel of the decor in this room.

Our Mini Suite was on the inside corridor and gave plenty of room to spread out. We also had a balcony with a small table and a mini-fridge that comes stocked with various beverages. This is an honor bar so if you take something, youll need to so indicate on the little form so your room can be billed.

Theres also a separate sink/vanity area outside the full bath, which can come in handy when more than one person is trying to get ready. The Inn of the Governors also has other levels of rooms at various price points, depending on the season. Many of the rooms have balconies and/or fireplaces, so if those features are important to you, make sure you ask about them.

The traditional room are outside corridor rooms that are minus the balcony or fireplace but they are still very nice and decorated in the same warm, welcoming Southwest style as all the others.

The hotel lobby is really fun to explore. It has beautiful furnishings and its luxurious without feeling pretentious.

Ive always perceived Santa Fe as a very grownup town. I dreamed often of going on a girls weekend there or a romantic get-a-way There are lots of spas and places to eat, drink and shop and theres just something about the beauty of the desert that pulls me in and calls me back. But, Santa Fe is a great place to go with kids as well, which surprised me a little bit.

We stayed at the Inn of the Governors located in the heart of downtown Santa Fe and thats my pick for families traveling to Santa Fe with their kids. Its absolutely suitable for a kid-free stay as well but it was SUCH a warm, welcoming environment for my family and full of Santa Fe charm.

The Inn of the Governors is family owned, which gave the place a different vibe than a big box hotel. The location, in the heart of of downtown Santa Fe, cannot be beat. Theres also free parking. Downtown Santa Fe is very walkable and there were lots of things to see and do within walking distance of the hotel.

When it comes to good-value budget options that are not too far from town, check out the Silver Saddle Motel. Located on Cerrillos Road, about four miles from the Santa Fe Plaza, it is an old-fashioned, family-run property with a kitschy Route 66 vibe throughout.

The rooms feature Old West-inspired styling but are clean and comfortable and come with flat-screen TVs and coffee makers. On-site amenities include a free continental breakfast and parking. The hotel is also pet-friendly.

The Econo Lodge Inn & Suites is another good budget choice, which is also on Cerrillos Road, just a few miles outside the downtown city limits. The rooms and suites are nothing fancy but are tidy and comfortable and come with free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs with premium cable.

The suites also have separate living spaces with pullout sofas making them a good option for families. On-site amenities include a free continental breakfast, free parking, a swimming pool, and hot tub.

Museum Hill The Heart Of Santa Fe With Kids

The best place to stay in Santa Fe New Mexico with Kids

Santa Fe has several museums with kid-friendly displays. Four terrific collections, a good cafe with indoor and outdoor seating, and the Santa Fe Botanical Garden are up on Museum Hill. Together, they present the art, history and culture of the Anglo, Native American and Hispanic Southwest in many bite-size displays.

Perhaps the most child-oriented place is the Museum of International Folk Art. Ask about the museums hands-on projects and activities that change seasonally, in addition to the book and toy lounge. All ages will be enthralled by the permanent exhibition entitled Multiple Visions: A Common Bond. The art and artifacts on display are only a fraction of collector Alexander Girards global treasure trove. Handmade toys from more than 100 countries are grouped together in realistic and often whimsical settings of daily life. The detail is remarkable.

The Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian features contemporary and traditional indigenous arts. This museum also has wonderful examples of adornment in the Center for the Study of Southwestern Jewelry. In contrast, the Here, Now and Always permanent exhibit at the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture focuses on the languages, history and cultures of the regions diverse Native Americans. This anthropological approach is supplemented with temporary shows about popular topics like photography and fashion.

We stayed at La Fonda on the Plaza. Its a beautiful and historic hotel and again, you might not expect to be all that kid-friendly.

But it has an outdoor pool and hot tub, and the location couldnt be better. We saw a few families at breakfast every morning.

The rooms are standard with bathrooms on the small side, pretty Southwestern décor and Nespresso machines.

If you dont stay, make sure to look around and consider taking one of its daily tours. Its filled to the brim with New Mexican art work and has quite a long history that spans the early days of the railroad and WWII intrigue at around Alameda.

The Inn of the Governors, two blocks south of the Plaza, is also a great family option with amenities like free breakfast and parking, refrigerators in the rooms and a heated outdoor pool.

Some of the rooms have the sink outside the bathroom, always handy for families, and several have kiva fireplaces. Theres also free cookies, tea and sherry in the afternoon.

If you want to combine your city sightseeing with some resort relaxation, consider the Hilton Santa Fe Buffalo Thunder, 14 miles from town.

Buffalo Thunder offers an expansive outdoor pool, kids splash pad and hot tub, golf and tennis, several restaurants, a pool grill, Starbucks and deli. All rooms have refrigerators and on-demand movies.

Spend A Day On The Slopes At Pajarito Ski Resort

*Disclaimer: We received complimentary ski passes in exchange for our honest review. All opinions are our own.

When you think of New Mexico, snowboarding is probably not the first thing youll think of. But it most definitely should not be the last!

We have boarded at many resorts and were pleasantly surprised at how much we loved Pajarito Ski Resort.

The history alone is fascinating. This resort had humble beginnings as a boys ranch. The boys would use horses and sleds to haul supplies up to make a tow rope.

The US army later took over the site and used it as a secret research location while developing the atomic bomb.

Volunteers helped to slowly turn the mountain into a small ski resort. It soon became a place for world-renowned scientists to escape the daily stress while working on the Manhattan Project at the nearby Los Alamos National Laboratory.

To get to the resort today you still have to pass through the Laboratorys security checkpoint. Pretty fascinating, huh?!

We also love that Pajarito is a smaller resort. Meaning less time waiting in line and more time on the slopes.

It also never feels crowded, we took many runs where we felt like we had the whole mountain to ourselves.

A smaller resort also means a smaller price tag. Pajarito makes skiing as a family affordable. Especially since 5th graders, as well as kids 10 and under, ski for free.

The snow is pretty decent as well. We visited in the springtime and lucked out with 11 inches of fresh powder.

More Santa Fe Trip Planning Tools

If you are planning your own adventure, check out one of the two Tourism Santa Fe Visitors Centers, located on the Plaza at the Plaza Galeria and the Rail Yard at the Santa Fe Depot. Check out the State of New Mexico Visitor Center, which is located right across the courtyard from San Miguel Chapel.

I recommend planning in advance as much as possible, especially when traveling with kids. That said, even if youve got all your plans firmly sewed up, a stop at the local visitors center is always a good decision. Youll meet people who are intimately familiar with the area and can suggest activities you might not have considered.

Where To Stay In Santa Fe: Inn And Spa At Loretto Review

Santa Fe, New Mexico is a fun town for parents, and can be surprisingly kid-friendly, too. Whether youre planning a parents-getaway or a family vacation, the Inn and Spa at Loretto offers an authentic feel, proximity to just about everything, and an upscale but relaxed vibe.

This boutique AAA four-diamond hotel has made Travel + Leisures World Best list, and houses an award-winning spa, but what I appreciated most was the authentic feel to the property. Located less than two blocks from Santa Fes historic Plaza and steps from dining and shopping, the Loretto is a five-story pueblo building surrounded by local flora and fauna and local sculptures. In fact, it sits adjacent to the famous Chapel at Loretto, and was built on the grounds of the former Academy of our Lady of Light. Its very serene, despite being close to Santa Fe attractions. Inside, the pueblo style includes long, tiled hallways, interior art shops, and plenty of patios, balconies, and stucco spaces.

As seemed true for Sante Fe in general, the average age of guests during my stay at the Loretto appeared to be about 65 I only saw a handful of families . Theres plenty to attract parents with kids, including the beautiful grounds, a lovely outdoor pool, and a spa that welcomes teens .

Getting To And Around Albuquerque Is Easy

From San Diego, its only a 90-minute flight to Albuquerques International Airport . After landing, I shuttled to the Hertz counter and rented a GMC Arcadia with Hertz NeverLost. Hertz NeverLost is an in-car GPS system featuring real-time content regarding attractions to visit, activities to enjoy, and places to eat. Navigating through New Mexico with Hertz NeverLost was easier than I ever thought possible. Every place I wanted to see was already preloaded into the cars GPS, making travel from Point A to Point B, almost effortless.

Normally, when I rent a vehicle, I go for the cheapest car that can accommodate my baby gear. Ive been doing it all wrong! My pimped-out Hertz was a key component to my vacation success and, in the future , Ill guiltlessly splurge on a Hertz SUV with four doors, all leather interior, satellite radio, and a rear view camera! I see now that Hertz rentals are worth it.
