Sisters Best Area Near Bend For Adventure
About 30 minutes to the northwest of Bend, Sisters is an epic destination for adventure travellers. Its considerably smaller than the city, so it comes with a secluded atmosphere. This gives visitors a more authentic insight into rural life in Oregon. Sisters is totally off the beaten path, so youll have ample opportunity to mingle with locals.
Secluded location aside, Sisters is packed with adventure activities. Though relatively unknown to outside tourists, residents from Bend and Redmond visit the area often to connect with nature. In the winter its also home to a small ski resort which is among the most affordable in the United States.
How Do I Get Around Bend
Bend is located 175 miles southeast of Portland, a three-hour drive. If youre coming from out of state, you can fly into the busy Portland International Airport , or search out flights to Roberts Field Airport in nearby Redmond , which is served by four major airlines. There are plenty of car-rental options at both airports, and taxis, rideshares, and airport shuttles from the Redmond airport can take you to your destination.
If youre not planning on using a car while youre in town, several motorcoach companies cross through Central Oregon. North-south Amtrak trains stop at Chemult, and riders can then take an Amtrak bus on to Bend. In town, public bus routes are plentiful, as are bike rentals, and the Mt. Bachelor Shuttle will take you up the mountain in summer and winter.

With roughly 300 sunny days per year, Smith Rock State Park expanses over 650 acres and is the perfect place to crank your central Oregon road trip up a notch. The Riverhouse on the Deschutes is full of Bend, Oregon history. Started by one of the families that founded a large part of the town, the Bend hotel is in a prime location on the Deschutes River. Only a few minutes from downtown Bend, there is talk of extending a trail all the way from Redmond to Sunriver, which would include the property near the Riverhouse on the Deschutes.
The hotel in Bend features a high-quality restaurant, Currents, and an outdoor deck that allows you to watch the river during summer. Westcliff Lodge has regular hotel rooms as well as 2 glamping tents but why would you want to stay in a regular room when the tents have a phenomenal view of the river? The tents are 12 by 14 canvas tents, filled with everything you need. The lodge is set on 5 acres and the tents are secured in the back. A port-a-potty and outdoor shower are located nearby.
What to do in Hood River: Visit the Columbia River Gorge, 80 miles of waterfalls and cliffs, for wonderful hiking and viewpoints. Get your fill on good Oregon beer at some of the best breweries in Oregon: Pfriem Family Brewers, Full Sail brewing, and Double Mountain Brewing. Take The Short Trip To Suttle Lake
Less than 15 miles northwest of Sisters, in Deschutes National Forest, Suttle Lake is a magnet for recreation throughout the summer. This natural 250-acre lake is deep and clear and surrounded by a stunning conifer forest. Everyday activities include boating, fishing, hiking, and checking out the resort amenities at The Suttle Lodge.
The Suttle Lodge offers a primitive but hip place to stay. Guests enjoy boat rentals, lawn activities, and on-site dining with decadent menus at The Boathouse. Overnight facilities include lodge rooms, primitive cabins, and deluxe cabins.
The Forest Service also operates two campgrounds separate from The Suttle Lodge. These two campgrounds, South Shore and Blue Bay Campgrounds, each have public boat ramps. South Shore is more accommodating to RVs, but Blue Bay also caters to bigger rigs. These campgrounds connect to the Suttle Lake Loop Trail, which circumnavigates the water with a 3.6-mile route.
Visit Iconic Oregon Waterfalls
Several of Oregon’s best waterfalls are within a short and scenic drive from Sisters. Many of these displays of gravity are spotted while traveling the McKenzie Pass-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway. And like Sahalie & Koosah Falls, within Willamette National Forest, some of these waterfalls are right on the McKenzie River.
The trailhead for Sahalie & Koosah Falls is approximately 35 miles from Sisters on Highway 20. A 2.6-mile section of the McKenzie River National Recreation Trail connects viewing areas for both waterfalls.
Another waterfall on the scenic byway, Proxy Falls, is accessible with a slightly shorter drive on the McKenzie Highway . This route is inaccessible throughout the winter. But in the summer, it leads to a stunning cascading waterfall within the Three Sisters Wilderness.
And Tumalo Falls, in Deschutes National Forest, is right at the backdoor of Sister’s neighboring city of Bend. From Sisters to the Tumalo Falls trailhead, it’s approximately an hour drive. Expect some crowds on the weekends at this iconic waterfall, and plan on visiting earlier in the morning to avoid the most congestion.
