Two popular summer routes are Skiathos to the port of Mantoudi on Euboea Island, and Skiathos to Agios Konstantinos on the mainland.

Finally, you can also reach Alonissos from both Skiathos and Skopelos. It is a perfect destination for a peaceful holiday.

Visit The Venetian Castle In Chora

Skopelos Yiayias Guest house, skopelos houses, SKOPELOS.COM

While youre in Skopelos Town, you should definitely visit the remains of the Venetian Castle in Skopelos, which is also known as Kastro. You can climb the steps from the harbor to the castle in just 20 minutes and its all free.

At the top, youll find a great viewpoint over Chora, a nice restaurant, many lazy cats lingering around, and even a small hotel. Even though there is not much left of the historical castle, except for some ruins, you can still enjoy the viewpoint.

I would recommend going here early in the morning before sunrise there is just something about watching a city wake up while the colors of the sky are coming to live!

Check Out Skopelos Towns Old Streets

The first great experience we had in Skopelos was actually when we were searching for our hotel. This may sound strange, but getting lost in the streets of Chora was just incredible!

We had to navigate narrow, steep streets while walking among white houses with colorful rooftops and pomegranate trees in the gardens. It was honestly like a fairytale Although quite a sweaty one when you think of the steep incline, the baking hot sun, and the backpacks glued to our wet backs.

But I can 100% recommend getting lost in the streets of Chora as one of the best things to do in Skopelos. Its just so authentic and beautiful.

South & West Coast Beaches Of Skopelos

Stáfylos, 4km from Hóra, is the closest proper beach, though small and crowded, with a single, merely adequate taverna at roads end. Better to walk five minutes east over the headland to more scenic, sand-and-pea-gravelVelanió, 600m long with a nudist zone and a seasonal kantína.

Agnóndas, about 3km west, has a small beach but mostly serves as an alternate ferry port among several tavernas, best is Pavlos, for seafood, unusual mezédes like tsitsírava and Apostolakis bulk wine. Theres better, white sand at Limnonári cove just to the west.

As the coastline bends to face west rather than south, the first substantial place is Pánormos bay, popular with yachts owing to its abundant, protected anchorage, somewhat less so with bathers owing to a steeply shelving, gravelly shore. Just around the corner, Miliá beachis superior, with two 400-metre arcs of tiny pebbles opposite Dhassía islet separated by a headland with a sometimes noisy beach bar at the south cove. Parking in seasonis impossibleunlessyou patronize the single, fortunately good taverna with its private lot. Kastáni beach, immediately north with its own access drive, was a major Mamma Mia! location but despite this is far calmer, with a naturist zone and no amenities besides a kantína working out of a converted bus. There are more secluded beaches at Hóvolo, outside otherwise dreary Élios village, built to rehouse victims of the 1965 quake, and Armenópetra, with the ship-shaped rock of the name justoffshore.

Skopelos Mamma Mia Island

Skopelos has always been my favourite Sporade since a first visit three decades ago. Its the best all-rounder of this group that also includes Skiáthos, Alónissos and Skýros forests and orchards not too burnt , eminently scenic beaches , some excellent tavernas in the harbour hóra , plus a not overly packaged feel owing to the lack of an airport. Apparently thehonchos incharge of filming Mamma Mia! thought so too, choosing Skopelos as the main shooting location during September 2007. Inevitably locals have cashed in on this with Mamma Mia! boat tours and such, but its hardly overpowering.

As on all the Sporades, there is scant evidence of ancient times, so the beach-flopping sybarite can flop without missing enormous cultural edification aside from the main town, a few scattered villages and rural monasteries.Geologically, geographically and mentality-wise Skopelos and its neighbours are extensions of mainland Magnesia province and specifically Mt Pílion musical tastes are firmly urban rather than Aegean, and medieval settlement from the Ionian islands fostered a style of Italianate singing.

A distinctive feature of the countryside are prune-drying ovens, scattering next to orchard cottages with their beaked chimneys. Skopelos was once noted for its prune-plums, but the late-summer, labour-intensive, kneaded-by-hand drying process was uneconomical compared to the chemically assisted California product, so the industry largely died out by the 1980s.

Visit The Mamma Mia Church

25 Most Beautiful Towns to Visit in Greece 2022 | Stunning Greek Islands

One of the most popular things to do in Skopelos is to visit the iconic church and its surroundings, which was a movie location in Mamma Mia! The Movie from 2008 starring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, and a lot of great male actors some sang better than others Have you seen it?

However, its of course not called the Mamma Mia Church. In reality, the name of the church is Agios Ioannis Kastri.

Its a spectacular sight to see this little beautiful church sit on top of a rock in the middle of the ocean. However, getting there is not so easy! The road is narrow and steep, so please take your time to get there if youre by driving yourself. Alternatively, you can join this Mamma Mia Island Tour if you dont want to go there by yourself.

This location is an absolute must visit on your trip to Skopelos! Not only is it one of the islands most popular landmarks, but you also get some spectacular views over the green island after walking up the 199 steps to the top. Make sure to also visit the tiny church on the top!

Panormos: The Best Beaches

Panormos is the best choice where to sleep in Skopelos for those looking for a purely seaside and relaxing stay, close to the most beautiful beaches.

Panormos beach is a mixture of sand and pebbles, a beautiful cove sheltered from the winds, with a calm and crystalline sea. It is no coincidence that it is considered by many to be the most beautiful on the island.

You will find several bars, restaurants and taverns lining the sea. The location is also excellent, it is located on the west coast about 12 km from the city of Skopelos.

Best Beaches In Skiathos

Koukounaries Beach

Koukounaries is undoubtedly one of the best beaches in Skiathos. In fact, according to many, it is one of the nicest beaches in all of Greece!

The gorgeous golden sandy beach stretches for over 700 meters, surrounded by hills and pine tree forests. Bars and restaurants with loud music line most of Koukounaries and stay open until late hours.

The nearby Banana Beach is smaller, more relaxed, though still a bit noisy. On the other hand, Little Banana, the only nudist beach on Skiathos is an oasis of peace. Both are perfect for sunset watching.

Agia Paraskevi Beach

Agia Paraskevi is another magnificent sandy beach, halfway between Koukounaries and Skiathos Town. Again its a long and wide beach made of fine golden sand. The abundance of hotels and restaurants in the proximity gives it a less secluded feel.

The beach itself is not that noisy, as there are only a few bars directly on it. Some 200 meters eastwards we find much smaller Kolios Beach, with only 2 little tavernas.

Further southeast, there is another nice sandy beach, Vromolimnos. Vromolimnos Wetland, next to the beach, is a smaller version of Koukonaries Lagoon.

Other Beaches

As mentioned above, there are more than 60 sandy beaches all over Skiathos. While you can stay on most beaches on the southern coast, those on the north are only accessible by car or boat.

Agnondas Panormos And Other Areas

For example, Panormous with it’s beautiful natural cove, large beach and clear blue waters, hosts many restaurants, bars, rental apartments and high quality hotels . Located on the South Western side of the island, Panormous is a great option for those looking for a relaxing break on the beach.
There are a great number of other options for visitors to explore throughout the island. For a more secluded seaside location, visitors might consider choosing to stay at the port community of Agnondas. Offering restaurants and cafes as well as a beautiful little harbour and beach. This small community has much to offer visitors looking for peace and privacy during their stay. Within a short drive of Skopelos Town, Stafylos Beach and the beautiful mountain roads that wind throughout the island, Agnondas is a great central location for visitors to use as their base.

The Best Hotels To Book On Skopelos Greece For Every Traveller

Discover the best places to stay on the charming island Greek of Skopelos, nicknamed the green-blue island.

Pines grow right down to the islands jagged shores, lending the sea its shimmering jewel shades. There are two traditional towns on the island Skopelos town and Glossa and between them, dramatic mountain scenery. Tranquil beaches, too, including one under the pinnacle-topped chapel of Agios Ioannis made famous in the wedding scene in Mamma Mia! . Another blessing is the lack of an airport, which has kept tourism low-key. The nearest is a short boat hop away on Skiathos, with direct connections to most European cities.

Best Beaches In Skopelos

Panormos and Milia Beaches

Panormos is the most popular beach on Skopelos Island. It is at the end of a small bay on the islands western coast. Several bars and restaurants dot this long pebble beach.

Close to Panormos, north of the bay, there are several small private beaches collectively known as Adrines.

Further north, across the Dassia Island, we find Milia, one of the best beaches in Skopelos. Tall hills with dense vegetation surround this beautiful beach. Though some call it the islands only sandy beach, it includes a mixture of sand and small pebbles. North of Milia, Kastani is another lovely beach, albeit much smaller.

Stafilos and Velanio Beaches

Stafilos is the second most popular beach on Skopelos. It is on the islands southeast corner, by the main road. The village of Stafilos is a bunch of houses by the road, a step away from the beach. Two peninsulas surround the beach, a small one on the west and a large one with an archeological site on the east.

Behind the latter, we find Velanio beach, Skopelos only nudist beach. Again, it is a long strip of pebble beach, with lush green hills all around.

There is only one bar on Stafilos, while there are no facilities on Velario Beach. The whole area has a very relaxed and natural feel.

Other Beaches

Other beaches on Skopelos are not as nearly as beautiful. That said, Skopelos Town has a relatively nice beach, perfect to relax after a long day of sightseeing.

Where To Stay In Skopelos: Conclusion

The Chora is still arguably the most convenient place to stay on the island. You have everything you could possibly need here.

Not to mention, the location is convenient for taking ferries to the other Sporades islands. Alonissos, Skiathos, Skyros, and Volos can be reached in a matter of hours.

If You Have To Choose

Without a doubt, visit both islands if you can. That said, we believe that you need at least five days to visit both Skiathos and Skopelos. Rushing through both beauties makes no sense. This is an experience, not a race!

To us, Skiathos is slightly more attractive, so we advise you to spend 3 days there and 2 in Skopelos. If you are short of time and have only 3-4 days, you must choose Skiathos or Skopelos. No worries, both are winning choices. Choose Skiathos if you are into fabulous sandy beaches and great hotels. Go to Skopelos if a laid-back atmosphere and beautiful architecture are more you.

If you are lucky and have more than a week, consider visiting another nearby island. There is no wrong choice: Alonnisos, Skyros, and Euboea are all great options.
