Proximity To Other Mountains
Aspen has an edge on Snowmass when it comes to its proximity to the other mountains that are part of Aspen Snowmass. Both Aspen Highlands Ski Resort and Buttermilk Ski Area are just three miles from downtown Aspen. Snowmass is about six miles away from Buttermilk and eight miles from Aspen Highlands.
While the difference doesn’t seem that great right now, it might seem a bit more substantial at the end of a long ski day when you have a hot tub calling your name.

Artisan At Stonebridge Inn Snowmass
For dinner try the Artisan in Stonebridge Inn. My certified organic Ora-King salmon, palisade peach and olathe corn relish, herb risotto was so delicious I didnt offer to share. Our son devoured his huge bowl of mac and cheese. Then he proceeded to inform me that it was even better than my homemade extra cheesy mac and cheese.
For Families Or Groups
- Limelight Snowmass is fun contemporary hotel with ski-in/ski-out lift access, spacious modern rooms with options for families or groups, and a great aprés-ski vibe. Little ones will love the multitude of games and grown ups can kick off evenings with a drink at the bar. The heated outdoor pool and huge climbing wall will be a hit with guests of all ages.
- Stonebridge Inn sits moments from the slopes, offering a simpler, affordable stay for outdoorsy travellers. With rustic pine furniture and wood panelled walls, the hotel has an appealing traditional feel. There’s an outdoor pool, fitness centre and spa, as well as flexible room and suite options for families and groups.

How Not To Spend A Fortune In Aspen
Ritzy Aspen is known for some of the highest hotel prices of any resort in North America. But lower-cost alternatives do exist. The sacrifice you make for the mouthwatering package that is Aspen Meadows Resort is the location. This campus-style property set in a 40-acre park is a 20-minute walk , theyre big, immaculately-kept, and well-equipped.
The Durant is another good-value location in town. Its a well-kept bed and breakfast, only two blocks from the main Ajax lift and right by a bus stop too giving easy access to the resorts other three mountains. The cheaper rooms are fairly small, but cute and clean, and if its location youre after, for a reasonable price, this is the place. Hotel Lenado is a small and homely B& B. However, the most moderate choice weve found in the resort is the St Moritz Lodge & Condos. Besides its regular hotel bedrooms, it also has some hostel rooms where you book a single bed in a shared room and use the shared bathroom down the hall one for men and one for women. It specializes in long lets from $31 per night for 30+ days in 2012-13.
Hotel Durant.
Slightly pricier is the Limelight Hotel, right in the centre of town. The hotel has large, well-equipped rooms and suites, some with kitchens, sitting rooms with fireplaces and terraces. Theres an in-house restaurant serving complimentary breakfast, pizzas and pasta. The Gant is a condo-hotel with some very good rooms.
Best Place In Snowmass
One of the highlights of the Snowmass Base Village is The Viceroy. Its ski-in ski-out at the base of the Assay Hill chair-lift, with some gorgeous rooms and suites, a library, an 87-foot-long glass-topped apres-ski bar and two restaurants including Eight K which serves a delicious breakfast. The Viceroys vast spa has some of the most unusual treatments weve ever come across and theres an outdoor area with lovely heated swimming-pool. Most useful is the in-house ski hire shop, Four Mountain Sports , which transports equipment between the four mountains.

Where To Eat & Drink In Snowmass
Snowmass has a number of restaurants to choose from I was surprised by the variety and the healthy options too! Plus everywhere had a great outdoor patio directly in the sun, great for apres!

Room For The Whole Family
If youre bringing the whole family up to Snowmass, you may want to consider a condominium. Hotels are great for solo travel but when you need space to spread out, a condo is typically the best choice. Sometimes you would rather cook in your unit or feel more comfortable with more space, a condo is the top choice for many.

Where To Stay In Aspen
Not all accommodation in Aspen is high end though there is shortage of accommodation aimed at mere mortals. Youll notice that most of our pick of accommodation is in Aspen, as opposed to Snowmass, eight miles down the valley. Thats because Aspen is where all the action is and if youre going to go all the way to Colorado to see it, you really ought to stay there, too. Snowmass is well-designed and is the better base for families and has had a billion-dollar makeover but it doesnt have Aspens sense of history, or its glamour. Highlands is strictly for serious skiers who catch the first lift and go to bed early.
Top Of The Village Condos By Destination Residences Snowmass
Snowmass Village is built up the side of the mountain. There appear to be a large amount of slpoeside condos, which typically tend to be our top pick as a family. We love the space to spread out and a kitchen so that we can eat in.
During a fall visit to Snowmass Colorado, we really enjoyed our Top of the Village condo by Destination Residences Snowmass. It truly was the top of the village where the street dead ended into the mountain.
The kids thought the bunks, in addition to twins in their bedroom were pretty cool.
It was spacious and I could imagine spending a week there with family.
The balcony overlooked the gorgeous mountain. And, theres a quaint pool and hot tub also built into the side of the mountain overlooking an aspen grove.

Ski Hike And Bike Access
There are a few big reasons people come to Snowmass. The top three are skiing/snowboarding, hiking and mountain biking. Theres access to some of the best skiing in the country on Snowmass Mountain and mountain biking comes in at a close second. Just minutes away from town center, there are countless hikes appropriate for the whole family. So, what should you look for in lodging to get the best of both worlds? Ski-in/ski-out access. Since much of the mountain biking on Snowmass is in the same terrain as the skiing, lodging that sits on the resort is the best option. Stonebridge Condominiums has some of the best ski-in/ski-out accommodations in Snowmass, with some porches sitting right on the hill.
Where To Stay Near Snowmass
We are planning a trip to Snowmass in mid-March. The hotels in Snowmass itself are quite expensive. We’re thinking of staying somewhere else first, then spending only a few days in Snowmass.
Can you suggest some cities within driving distance that may be easy to fly to? Denver is possible. Aspen is there, but not many hotel choices it seems.

Are you skiing or just hanging out?
The beauty of Snowmass is that a high percentage of the lodging is ski in – ski out … a very very nice convenience. As Smushie said, Aspen / Snowmass is one of the most expensive ski destinations in the World … And you’re a bit late to the party, many people make reservations 12 to 6 months in advance to get prime times and prime locations. If you’re concerned about $$$, you may want to look somewhere else.

You can fly into Aspen which can be super convenient but direct flights are limited and weather can be an issue.
Not sure re. any less expensive places around Aspen / Snowmass … someone may chime-in … or you can pull up the area on Google Maps and search for “hotels” or “condominius” and they will pop up.
If your looking for “easy to get to” skiing, look at Park City, UT … 30-45 minutes from SLC and some less expensive lodging options.

Which Is Better Aspen Or Snowmass
Aspen and Snowmass are located just over nine miles from one another in Colorado’s stunning Roaring Fork Valley. With both destinations so close together, it can be a challenge to decide if you should stay in Aspen or Snowmass during your next visit.
While both have exceptional dining, events, and activities, Aspen has a bit more to offer than Snowmass. With that being said, we recommend you stay in Aspen and make plans to visit Snowmass during your trip. Here’s why.
The Lounge At Limelight Snowmass
Breakfast, lunch, Apres and dinner here were all surprisingly good. The lounge is a comfortable space with a fireplace to warm up and a glass wall of windows looking out on the firepits on the deck outside, to the ice skating rink beyond.
Breakfast is included with your hotel stay. Due to Covid, we did collect our breakfast from a wide variety of to go options and bring it back up to the room. Everything was good. But I really loved the overnight oats. They were delicious, health yet hearty enough to get me through a morning of skiing.
We had sandwiches, mac and cheese and chicken fingers for lunch. Freshly made, large portions.
I enjoyed mulled wine by the fire outside for Apres. It had been a decade since I last had mulled wine . Great way to warm up!
Fondue and crispy brussel sprouts for dinner. Yumm! The steak was good, as were the kids meals.

What To Do In Snowmass Summer + Fall
Spa at The Viceroy A spa day at the Viceroy is not to be missed really any season you are in Snowmass. After our treatment, we spent a few hours at the hotel tub and pool soaking up the great bluebird day. The Pool area has a full bar and happens to have live music when we visited too!
I really wish my photos could do this space justice, but you will just have to go and see for yourself.
Hiking The Roaring Fork Valley is gorgeous and there are 100s of amazing hikes in the area. While summer is gorgeous fall is really poping in Snowmass
- Spiral Point This easy trail will wind you up above Snowmass for 360 views
- Elk Camp Trail I didnt do this trail exactly but we started in Snowmass village and hike to the elk camp chair lift and road it to the top which I highly recommend the views of the maroon bells are stunning!
- American Lake Trail You will feel the burn but the views are gorgeous and would be GOLDEN during fall
Golf While the Snowmass Course is private there are still a number of courses in the area. In the fall we played the 9-hole course Ranch at Roaring Fork
Where To Stay
There are two village areas. Theres the Upper Village, which is the original area and is truly ski in ski out. And, theres the newly re-developed base village. Most of the lodging in this Snowmass base village is just steps to the lifts. This is where you will find most of the fun family activities such as ice skating and The Collective Snowmass. Wherever you stay will be convenient to the mountain.
