Weve always arrived in the middle of Rally Week or the weekend following the Sturgis Rally, and there has always been plenty going on more than enough to make our Sturgis Motorcycle Rally experience complete.
But Im told theres even more activity that takes place during the weekend before the official Sturgis Rally dates each year. So if you want to take in the full Sturgis Rally experience, plan to attend the weekend before!
No matter when you arrive, Sturgis is a relatively tame event for the most part. Its much calmer than I had imagined. Sure, things get loud and obnoxious at the off-site venues sometimes, but its far less rowdy than I was initially led to believe.

When you come to Sturgis, you’ll want to wear appropriate gear and clothing. Here are a couple of tips on what to wear to the Sturgis Rally:

Where To Park At Sturgis
The side street that runs parallel to Lazelle Street is Main Street which serves as motorcycle parking for several blocks. You can park your bike there for as long as you like!
If you dont want to park with thousands of other motorcycles next to you, you can also park on just about any other side street downtown for free.
Parking is never an issue at Sturgis either downtown or at the off-site venues like Buffalo Chip, Broken Spoke, or Iron Horse Saloon because the parking areas are clearly marked and there are people directing traffic, as necessary.
While parking is free at Sturgis, most of the area attractions are not like Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore, state parks, and national parks.
Every state park or monument was around $10 to enter/park. We traveled to Mount Rushmore, Sylvan Lake and Crazy Horse Memorial, which all charged admission. The bars on the outside of town charge admission due to the acts playing.

A local racing club called the Jackpine Gypsies started the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in 1938. NOBODY OWNS THE STURGIS MOTORCYCLE RALLY. Since day 1, the Sturgis Rally has been .
In 2018, the Eighth Circuit Court made that fact clear when they ruled that 100s of private entities have organized the Sturgis Rally over the years.
“We agree and hold that the jury could not infer from the onerous planning that the City undertakes to provide infrastructure for the Rally that the City was the organizer or sponsor of the Rally. To allow such an inference would be tantamount to saying that it would be reasonable to infer that the City of New York organizes the sessions of the United Nations General Assembly because of everything it does to assist their occurrence.”
The court went on to say that an organization cannot establish ownership “simply by getting its officials and agents to say that it is.”
