Where To Stay In Tavira Portugal

Getting To Tavira Algarve

A day in Tavira, Portugal. Could this be Algarve’s most authentic town and most beautiful beach?

The easiest way to get to Tavira is to fly into the Faro airport, which serves the Algarve region and is only about 30 minutes away by car. There are direct flights to Faro from Lisbon and many other European cities. From Faro, you can rent a car or take a bus or taxi east to Tavira.

Another option is flying to Lisbon and renting a car or taking a bus to Tavira. Using toll roads, Tavira is about a 3-hour drive from Lisbon. From Seville, its only two hours drive but rental car insurance gets a little tricky between countries, so I would only drive from Spain as part of a larger itinerary.

A car isnt necessary once you get to Tavira. But if you want to explore the area, having a car gives you more flexibility. For me, driving in the Algarve was the easiest place in Portugal, because I wasnt navigating as many narrow winding streets like in Sintra or Porto!

Dont Forget To Eat And Drink Wine

Tavira is a small town so these sites can be explored over a few days.

Your evenings can be spent alfresco dining in the historic centre, indulging in freshly caught fish and locally produced wine.

Many specialities of Tavira include tuna, swordfish, red mullet and stone bass, which are often served with rice, salads and chips.

Eating out is super affordable in Portugal, with food, drink and transport significantly cheaper than most other European holiday destinations.

The city is also less commercialized than the central Algarve and therefore, even cheaper again!

We loved Tavira with its mixture of narrow cobbled streets, piazzas and restaurants . Although catering for tourists, the town seemed not to lose its identity. Cutting through the middle is a wide tidal river with picturesque houses on either side. A shaded garden leading to the ferry boat is on one side with restaurants set back with a view over the water. For two euros the ferry boat will take you to and from a wonderful beach, passing a field of flamingos on the way.

Olho Where To Stay In Algarve For Relaxation

The nearest town to both Faro and the Ria Formosa Natural Park is the old fishing village of Olhão. If you plan to take any day trips by ferry to nearby islands, they leave from Olhão, making this a good place to stay. Looking for quiet places in the Algarve? Olhão is a quiet respite from nearby Faro and the proximity means you can still enjoy anything youd like to see in Faro, but have a quiet retreat at the end of the day.

Olhão itself has many cute cafes, shops and restaurants, and youll definitely have a more local, authentic feel than in some of the larger cities and ports.

Salema Burgau And Luz

As you head east along the southern coast, the next two fishing villages of note are Salema and Burgau. Salema has attracted more attention and therefore investment in recent years but they are both protected by being within the natural park so not overdeveloped.

Read more about Salemas charms in this post.

Luz is the first beach and town after leaving the natural park and is dominated by a massive cliff. The pleasant promenade is lined with cafés and restaurants and there are more of these as you head up the hill and into the village, which is a mixture of the traditional and the tourist-oriented and still quite attractive, especially when compared to some of the more popular destinations between Lagos and Faro.

Accommodation options

Casa Praia Mar is a small modern guesthouse with a pool thats just a couple of minutes walk from Salemas beach and restaurants. Some rooms have balconies and kitchen facilities and theres free parking! Grab a room with a view

Tavira Old Town And Churches

THE BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN THE ALGARVE – PORTUGAL – 4K Algarve Travel Guide

Be sure to stroll Taviras winding cobblestone streets. Next to the Castle, youll find several churches, just some of many in Tavira. The Gothic-design Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo has a tall clock tower remodeled from a former minaret, while the Igreja de Santiago dates to the 13th century.

The most impressive is the Renaissance Igreja da Misericórdia with beautiful azulejo tiles. You can also see Fado concerts here. Many churches are closed except for services or concerts, so visit just before mass to get a peek at interiors.

Phonecian ruins from the 8th century BCE can be found just below the Castelo, as well as Moorish foundations from the 12th century AD and a 17th-century Portuguese mansion.

Visit Cabanas De Tavira

Cabanas receives more tourists than any other village in Tavira.

But worry not.

Cabanas de Tavira still resists the effects of mass tourism you can see in some places in the Algarve.

Its name comes from the first huts built here centuries ago to support tuna fishing.

Currently, fishing is still one of the villages main economic activities, as you can see in its many waterside restaurants.

Cabanas has also a picturesque promenade overlooking Ria Formosa National Park, and a lovely beach.
