Daily Life For An Inmate In Prison

Because there is such a variety of security levels, inmates are put on a strict schedule. Also, all rules and procedures must be followed at all times.

Inmates who are not on death row are eligible to work in furniture manufacturing and mattress making. They are given vocation skills such as electrical skills, graphic arts, landscaping, dry cleaning, plumbing, and fabrication.

Inmates are also able to receive education programs such as the GED program and pre-release program that prepares inmates to be released.

Other programs inmates are able to participate in include religious activities, arts and corrections, Shakespeare, anger management, Yoga, gardening, environmental conscientiousness, cultural awareness, health awareness, and more.

When an inmate is first placed in Tonopah Conservation Camp, they will be in something called the reception center. They can be in reception up to 120 days. This is to establish their level of security and place them in the appropriate groups.

Because of this, it is important to do an inmate search every so often to ensure an inmate has not been assigned to a different location within the facility.

Today, youre going to explore a few more popular spots in the Yosemite National Park Glacier Point and the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias. Both are in the same general area of the park, so it doesnt really matter which one you want to do first.

Glacier Point: An Iconic View With Hiking Opportunities

When open , you can drive to Glacier Point by taking the Wawona Road south from Yosemite Valley. After traveling about 13 miles, turn on to the Glacier Point Road at the Chinquapin intersection. Day Eight: Explore Great Basin National Park

This underrated park is one of the least visited in the National Park system, seeing just 90,000 visitors annually. Compare that to the most visited park, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which saw 12.1-million visitors in 2020.

Hiking, stargazing, and going on the guided tour of Lehman Caves are the top things to do in Great Basin National Park. Here are our recommendations for your visit.

Day Trip To A Nearby Ghost Town

Before this trip, I have always wanted to explore a ghost town. There is something eerily cool about seeing a town that has been nearly untouched for decades. I love thinking about the people who used to live in these towns.

Who were they, and what was their story?

First things first. Do you know what a ghost town is and why they exist? In the early 1900s, mining was the industry everyone got into because that’s where the money was. Whether you were someone’s husband, uncle, son, roommate, basically if you were a man, you would most likely be working in the mines. People from all over the US started flocking to the west with the hopes of striking it rich. There were so many people that the towns that already existed couldn’t contain them all, so new towns had to be built to accommodate everyone.

All good things eventually come to an end, right? When the silver was running out, people were forced to leave these mining towns to look for work elsewhere, leaving these towns abandoned for decades.

Luckily for us, these towns still exist, and many of them are open for visitors. Some of them are a bit more lively and taken care of than others, but regardless visiting these towns is like stepping back in time. There are a couple of ghost towns close to Tonopah, and I highly recommend spending a day exploring them if you can.

To get to these towns, you absolutely need a car. There are no buses or trains that stop in these towns.

How To Get To Tonopah Nevada

Visit Tonopah, Nevada _ by THS-Visuals Motion Pictures

Since Tonopah is such a small town, there isn’t much public transportation. It’s possible to get to Tonopah on the bus from Vegas or Reno, but it will be a lot easier to get around if you have a car. I can’t drive, so luckily, I was with someone that did, but if I were alone, I would have to get to Vegas or Reno and then take a bus to Tonopah.

My favourite website to book buses is Wanderu. I recommend checking them out if you plan on taking the bus.

If you are flying into Nevada, then you will want to fly to Reno or Vegas. They are both about the same distance from Tonopah but in different directions.

Day Ten: Reno The Biggest Little City In The World

Today youll be heading to the intimate metropolis of Reno, Nevada. Say goodbye to the vast, lonely desert, and hello to neon lights, great food, and bustling neighborhoods.

Driving time: 3 hours

Sure, you can head to Reno to gamble, but its also got a great arts scene, a thriving downtown, fantastic green spaces, and great food. A day certainly isnt enough, so if youre not too road-weary, consider spending a few days. Here are some Reno highlights to consider.

  • Nevada Museum of Art: Founded in 1931 with 70,000 square feet of space for exhibits featuring art from 19th to the 21st century as well as growing collection of contemporary art.
  • Bruka Theatre: Named Best Theatre Company by Reno News and Review, Bruka Theatre has been going strong for 29 years, producing classic and contemporary plays in an intimate setting.
  • Wander around MidTown: A wonderful community and home to more than local boutiques, 20+ restaurants, and a thriving art and music scene.
  • Wingfield Park: This isnt your typical city park. At Winfield Park, you can go white water rafting or swimming in the Truckee River, catch an outdoor show, or grab take-out from a nearby cafe for a delightful picnic.

If youre traveling U.S. Routes 6 and 95, the town of Tonopah acts as an A++ start or end point for the Extraterrestrial Highway and natural overnighter on the Free-Range Art Highway, respectively. No matter how you get here, give yourself ample time to explore, as Tonopah positively brims with only-in-Nevada experiences.

# 5 Tonopah Stargazing Park

Away from the big city lights of Las Vegas and Reno, Tonopah, Nevada has the unique distinction of having one of the darkest nighttime skies in the country. Take advantage of this rare opportunity where the brightest lights around are what you see in the sky. On clear nights, you can see up to 7,000 stars and the Milky Way with your bare eyes, no equipment necessary.

Day Six: The Extraterrestrial Highway To Cathedral Gorge State Park

Tonopah Station Hotel Casino Restaurant and RV Park ...

Today youll be driving on the weirdly secluded Extraterrestrial Highway. Download your favorite road trip tunes because were covering some desert ground.

Driving time: 3 hours

We know youre a fan of all things wild and wacky or you wouldnt be reading this post, so lets head deeper into the desert on Nevada State Route 375, also known as the Extraterrestrial Highway. Get gas before leaving Tonopah, because youre about to embark into some of the most desolate desert terrain in the United States.

So, why is this called the ET Highway and should you be worried about alien life on your trip. The highways proximity to the top-secret Area 51 government base along with reported UFO observations is what led to the name.

The designation of the Extraterrestrial Highway has made the road and the tiny town of Rachel a bit of a tourist attraction. That doesnt mean its busy. Youre not likely to come across many other travelers on this route, but the ones you do meet may have more than a passing interest in otherworldly lifeforms.

Welcome to Rachel, Nevada!

This isnt really a long stretch of pavement, but youll feel like its taking forever when you spot a sign for Rachel, population 70.

Cathedral Gorge State Park

We absolutely recommend pitching your tent here for the night, hiking the loop trail, befriending the jackrabbits, and watching the stars before continuing on your journey. If you dont want to camp, there are a few lodging options in nearby Panaca.

Day One: Yosemite National Park: Yosemite Valley

Today youll arrive in Yosemite National Park, settle into your lodging/campsite, and explore Yosemite Valley.

Driving time: Depends on where youre coming from, but plan on 3-4 hours.

The first thing you should know about visiting Yosemite National Park, especially if youre only staying for a few days is that you wont be able to see and do everything. The park is huge, covering 1,187 square miles of wilderness.

Our suggestion would be to spend the first afternoon getting your campsite set up or checking into your lodging, and then exploring Yosemite Valley and doing a few short hikes. No need to run yourself ragged on the first day of a mega road trip!

Lodging and Camping in Yosemite Valley

You will find a few lodging options just outside of the Big Oak Flats entrance to Yosemite National Park on Route 120, but I 100% recommend finding lodging or camping inside the park if you can. This will save you a good amount of driving time, plus the frustration of having to drive in traffic as you head into the park each morning.

Lodging inside the park is expensive and hard to find in the summer unless you plan way ahead , and while camping in Yosemite National Park is affordable, competition for campsites is stiff, especially in the summer.

Reservations are required year-round for camping in Yosemite Valley and summer and fall camping at Hodgdon Meadow, Crane Flat, Wawona, and half of Tuolumne Meadows.

Day Nine: The Loneliest Road In America

Visit Tonopah, Nevada – 2017

That would be Highway 50, which travels across the state of Nevada, from Great Basin all the way to Lake Tahoe. Life Magazine gave Highway 50 the title of the Loneliest Highway, with a warning that readers not embark on the journey unless they possessed certain survival skills.

Driving time: 3.5 hours

While Highway 50 travels through a stark desert landscape, theres plenty to see. Heres an overview of the places you should check out.

Lodging on the Loneliest Road in America

We were excited to see a bunch of independent motels in Austin, which is a small town right in the middle of Highway 50 as youre driving west. We recommend checking into the Cozy Mountain Motel before exploring Hickson Petroglyphs and Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park .

Cozy Mountain Motel is a charming hotel in an equally charming town, with luxurious linens, cozy rooms, and a handful of chickens to welcome you when you arrive.

Bright sparkly lights, world-renowned DJ’s, pool parties, and hordes of obnoxious drunk 20-somethings are what come to my mind when I think of Nevada, but after a recent trip, I took there, my perception of the state has completely changed.

Nevada is beautiful with tons to see & do, and it has unexpectedly become one of my favourite US states. I am already planning a trip back. Oh, and guess what? You don’t have to be completely and utterly shit faced to enjoy Nevada, and all of its glory. It’s a fun place to explore sober too.

Anyway, the only city in Nevada I have visited is Vegas, so when my cousin invited me on a cross country road trip, the first state we were going to pass through was Nevada. I was determined to do more than get drunk every night and go dancing. As fun as those things are, I wanted to get to know a more local side of Nevada.

After planning our entire road trip using my travel spreadsheets, our first stop was a small town called Tonopah. It was in the middle of nowhere.

You may be asking yourself why anyone would visit such a place.

Anywho, we will get more into ghosts later.

Also, don’t worry. Most of the murders happened ages ago, so you should be safe.
