Wiscasset Is One Of The Prettiest Towns On The Mid
Wiscasset is one of the prettiest towns on the mid-Maine coast. Aggravating to visit right now because of the on-going work to replace the downtown sidewalks. But no pain – no gain. Lovely walks can be made along the back streets. Shops and antiques are high end – not for bargain hunters. A variety of restaurants are in walking distance from each other. We ate at the Water Street Kitchen and Bar, which is a short walk along the river from downtown, and it was excellent.
The Worlds Best Lobster Roll
Directly across the Sheepscot River, youll discover the home of the best lobster roll in the world at Reds Eats. This Maine dining staple, which operates out of a tiny lobster shack, is a must for all of our guests. Each toasted roll is excessively stuffed with juicy lobster meat with a side of warm butter. Expect heavy traffic and long lines, but you cannot skip this award-winning lobster shack, made famous by Andrew Zimmern and other television personalities.
If patience isnt one of your virtues, cross the street to Sarahs Cafe for small-town charm, handmade pizza, delicious clam chowder, fresh seafood, and mouthwatering desserts. Sarahs bakes their bread onsite, enhancing their sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, and pies.
For an elegant alternative to lobster shacks and cafes, seek out Little Village Bistro on the north side of Wiscasset. Every entree is stunningly plated, and each bite is memorable. Their garlic-dusted bistro steak with mashed potatoes and asparagus is a crowd favorite. Seafood lovers have to try their crispy seared salmon, scallops, and crab-stuffed haddock!

Armed Guards Protect Tons Of Nuclear Waste That Maine Cant Get Rid Of
In the summertime, the picturesque village of Wiscasset is infamous for its long lines of people hungry to try a lobster roll at Reds Eats and cars that crawl through town on the often-clogged U.S. Route 1.
But just a few miles south of downtown is a different kind of roadblock: 550 metric tons of nuclear waste stored on a coastal peninsula at the now-decommissioned Maine Yankee atomic energy plant that have nowhere to go.
The change in presidential administrations means another chance for the federal government to make good on its promise to remove the waste, so the site can be closed for good. The Biden administrations Department of Energy seems to be picking up where the Obama administration left off, creating a process for communities to volunteer to host the waste.
What worries me is that there really isnt any national leadership right now on this stuff. There isnt an agency that has a mission and has developed a strategy, that has goals and is willing to act on it, Don Hudson, the chairman of the Maine Yankee Community Advisory Panel, said. Were currently in this limbo.
Thats a problem because the waste 1,400 spent nuclear fuel rods housed in 60 cement and steel canisters, plus four canisters of irradiated steel removed from the nuclear reactor when it was taken down is safe for now, but cant stay in Wiscasset forever.
All the taxpayers in the United States are paying for the governments failure to meet its obligations, he said.

Where Should You Stay
The wedding venue is located at 637 River Road in Edgecomb, Maine, about a five-minute drive from downtown Newcastle/Damariscotta.
We recommend booking a place to stay as early as possible September is still quite touristy in this area, and accommodations fill up quickly.
A good option is to book an Airbnb or Vrbo in the area Newcastle, Damariscotta, Edgecomb, Boothbay, Bristol, and Wiscasset are all towns close to the venue that have many options for short-term rentals.
Our favorite option/recommendation is to camp or stay at a cabin! You can book yurts, cabins, and campsites at Hidden Valley Nature Center.
You could also get super cute and stay in a bed and breakfast! Here are some options in downtown Damariscotta/Newcastle/the general venue area:
Where To Go From Wiscasset
My husband and I will be in Wiscasset in late August for a couple of nights, and we’d love some advice on where to go after that. We have from Thurs-Sun and will be flying out of Portland. This is our first trip to Maine – we want to spend our time in a town or two along the coast, but we don’t want to be in the car too much . We love the outdoors/water activities, but also like sightseeing/shopping. Is Bar Harbor/Acadia too far for that short period of time? Best to focus on Boothbay/Camden? Any suggestions would be most welcome!
Bar Harbor and the Acadia region would be an easy drive from Wiscasset. You would even have time to stop in Camden on the way — have lunch, walk around a bit, drive to the top of Mount Battie just north of the village.
Then you could have all of Friday and Saturday to explore Acadia National Park and the villages of Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor, and Southwest Harbor. Take a hike, paddle a kayak, have tea and popovers at the Jordan Pond House, take a boat ride on the Lulu or the Margaret Todd, or perhaps take a bike ride on the carriage roads.
On Sunday it would be just a three hour drive down to Portland by way of Bangor and I-95.
Bar Harbor might be a little more congested and trafficky than you’re looking for. Boothbay is a hopskipjump from Wiscasset, and combined with Camden would certainly be enough to do for the weekend.
