Wild Camping & Fly Camping
Wild camping is not permitted anywhere in the Yorkshire Dales without prior permission from the landowner.
As the National Park Authority we do not have the power to allow camping on private land and we do not permit camping on the small amount of land that we own.
Fly camping and overnight occupation of vehicles in our car parks is also not allowed at any time. Instead choose from one of the many campsites in the Yorkshire Dales from quiet sites to glamping, there is something for everyone. Again, use our where to stay search.

Boggle Hole Yha Whitby
You would be forgiven for not knowing about Boggle Hole YHA, it hides in a coastal valley so narrow that its eaves almost touch on both sides. A few yards further down is the sea with cliffs that are full of fossils and jet watch out for the tides though. Robin Hood’s Bay is an easy stroll. The hostel is a real treat: a warren of cosy rooms and hideways in an old mill building. There is a cafe selling hot food and breakfasts plus a games room well-stocked with puzzles and board games. If you are walking the coastal path, the hostel is right on it very convenient but it is not so easy for car drivers, being 500m from the nearest parking up on the hill behind. A Little Bit More About Hawes And Masham
In addition to having these great culinary attractions, Hawes and Masham are quite lovely towns to visit and explore. They looked and felt exactly as we would imagine British towns in North Yorkshire to look and feel, with stone buildings and winding, narrow, cobbled streets. We particularly loved the small waterfalls in Hawes. And Masham has the loveliest buildings with ivy and flowers growing all over them.
Of course each of these Yorkshire market towns also has a market. You can visit the market in Hawes on Tuesday and the market in Masham on Wednesday and Saturday. We happened to be in each town while the markets were on and though they are small, they definitely add a lively atmosphere. So while you shouldnt go out of your way to plan a visit around the markets , if you have the opportunity, check them out. There are also a whole bunch of cozy pubs and other great places to eat and drink in Hawes and Masham. And there were quite a few accommodation options in each town as well. We provide our recommendations for where to eat, drink, and stay in Hawes and Masham later on.
We really enjoyed the relaxing walks we took around both Hawes and Masham. So even if youre visiting these towns for their access to the countryside, definitely take the time to explore the nooks and crannies of the towns themselves. And then you can get to the real Yorkshire Dales walks!

Feversham Arms Hotel & Verbena Spa
The Feversham Arms Hotel & Verbena Spa describes itself as a Mediterranean oasis, tucked away in North Yorkshire. Its heated outdoor swimming pool and chic terrace lit by twinkling fairy lights certainly make it feel like a foreign escape. But there are some touches that are distinctly Yorkshire: the roaring log fire in the lounge, and the cosy rooms with fluffy, duck-down duvets. Wrap up in your fluffy bathrobe and slippers and treat yourself to one of the indulgent spa treatments. Or, try walking a stretch of The Cleveland Way long distance walking route, which starts in nearby Helmsley.
Walking In The Yorkshire Dales
The best thing to do in the Yorkshire Dales is walk. And we love walking, so we were excited to get out there. Although we were the least professional walkers on the trails, what with our lack of walking sticks and a dog. There are public walking trails everywhere. Youll see these tiny little paths winding behind and through peoples property and you wont believe its actually a public footpath, but it is! Its wonderful. Both Hawes and Masham had access to some great walks. Given our amateur walker status, as well as Sarahs lung disease, we chose easy to medium level walks. Its better that we not try to describe these walks to you. Well just let our pictures of the green landscape dotted with stone structures and a whole lot of sheep do the talking for us.
There are two walks in these areas that we would recommend seeking out. In Hawes, we walked to see the Hardraw Force . You must pay a small fee in the Green Dragon Inn to access it, its definitely worth it. Also worth it is stopping at the Green Dragon Pub to rest and recharge with a pint! And from Masham, we drove about ten minutes to Hackfall Woods. There you can choose from several walks of varying lengths and difficulty as are detailed in this super handy brochure. It was quite different from the other walks we took since we were in a forest for much of it. There were also ruins and a cool fountain which you hand pump to turn on.

Bank House Farm Hostel Glaisdale
The delightful valley of Glaisdale goes almost unnoticed in the eastern half of the North York Moors, with the nearby attractions of Goathland , the steam railway to Pickering and even Whitby soaking up most visitors. This relative isolation makes Bank House Farm even more of a gem, sitting in an elevated position on one side of the wide valley, with scintillating views to all sides. Emma and Chris Padmore farm organically here , and welcome visitors to their converted lambing barn and “cart shed”, which sleeps 11 upstairs under the beams in Ikea single beds on oatmeal carpets. Downstairs, the huge old doorways have been glassed in to throw light on a large open-plan communal space with a modern kitchen, bench tables and long sofas which can sleep three more. Outdoors, there’s a huge trampoline for panoramic bouncing, a stone-flagged barbecue and seating area, and walks right off the property, including the couple of miles down through ancient woodland to Glaisdale village and the nearest pub. One thing to note: at weekends, you usually have to book the whole hostel.Glaisdale, 01947 897297, bankhousefarmhostel.co.uk. Dorms, £18, under-16s £10, under-5s free

Dales Bike Centre Fremington
Long may you wonder at the names of the bunk rooms at Dales Bike Centre in deepest Swaledale “Booze” and “Crackpot” among them. But keen mountain-bikers know them as local villages, as you’ll doubtless be told in the funky little cafe at the heart of the operation. There are also serious cycle facilities on site , while the accommodation sits above both cafe and bike shop in the two adjacent, stone-built dales barn buildings. Small bunk rooms in pine, cream and peppermint share high-quality, modern showers and toilets, and the above-cafe rooms also have a walk-in kitchenette. Everyone gets after-hours access to the cafe where there’s free Wi-Fi and “24hr-cake”. Breakfast is cereal and a bacon sandwich or scrambled eggs, after which you’re set up for a day’s biking on Swaledale’s old lead-mining trails and grouse-beater tracks. No question, the centre is aimed squarely at bikers , but for a “bunk and breakfast” with a touch of class, this place can’t be beaten.Parks Barn, Fremington, Reeth, 01748 884908, dalesbikecentre.co.uk. Tips For Walking In The Yorkshire Dales
If youre an amateur walker or this is your first time in the Yorkshire Dales, we highly recommend getting a map for your walk. In Hawes, our friendly and experienced B& B owner gave us maps and books and told us all about the walks we were interested in doing. In Masham, we bought a map from the Masham Community Office before setting off. They also told us some needed adjustments to our routes. Of course even with all that preparation, we still got lost on basically every walk we took. So go prepared with extra water just in case. And if you get stuck in between stone fences with the sheep , just stay calm and look for a way out. Youll eventually find one. Lastly, dont feed or otherwise engage with the sheep. And watch your step!
